The nature and scope of relationships have changed dramatically in the contemporary world, and this evolution has seen the gradual integration of different cultures within single family units. This progression is significant, and offers a portent of how the individuals of the world can subsist in a global and multicultural harmony. If you assess the variable stages of cultural integration through the ages, then you see that we are simply at the next step of social advancement, on the long and troubled path towards a multicultural society.
How Racial Integration has Changed Over Time
Society has witnessed a gradually changing attitude towards race relations, from certain factions suffering oppression to their acceptance and subsequent integration into opposing cultures. This transition has seen many instances of violence and tragedy, as those who have fought for racial equality have often given their lives to ensure that prejudices were eradicated from the social fabric. This period has led to the current social climate, which although still carries a distinct threat of racial discrimination, does at least see that multiculturalism is supported on a federal level.
Historically, different cultures and creeds would subsist in specific geographical locations, and the idea of racial integration was not even a logistical consideration. However, as individuals and families began to emigrate and move between different countries, mixed racial groups were formed within the boundaries of single nations. The US in particular was a particularly attractive outlet for those seeking new pastures, and so became a haven for a meld of cultures and separate racial groups.
However, although different cultures subsisted within a single country, they would tend to congregate within certain locations and form like minded communities. It is more recent developments that have seen people of different cultures form long standing romantic liaisons, and create family units that boast a diverse range of values and inherent religious beliefs. This could be considered as something if a breakthrough for society, that can now look forward to an entirely successful integration of multiculturalism.
Overcoming Racial and Cultural Prejudice
The hope is that as racial prejudices continue to subside, so too there will be an increasing number of mixed race relationships and multicultural family units. It is through the continued processes of integration that the individual elements of society may learn to tolerate and understand one another, eventually leading to more tightly woven global community. Of course, this is an idealism, and is one that is fraught with opposition and obstacles from those who seek to preserve an independence of race and culture in their society.
It is naïve to think that these groups do not exist, whether it is patriots overly zealous in protecting their nationality, or religious extremists who are entirely intolerant of any other belief system of culture. Despite the continued evolution of multiculturalism, there will be always be social factions who see it is a steady dilution of their own culture and history, and will therefore stand opposed to its place within society. Though we should expect this opposition to be omni-present, it does not mean that multiculturalism cannot prosper in the longer term.
As long as couples continue to form relationships based on personal values and attraction rather than a perception of an opposing race or culture, then we will continue to see a rise in the diversity in family units. This should mean that multiculturalism will become more prominent with each generational progression, until the spectre of prejudice has been largely eroded from civilized society. Ultimately, it will be increasingly difficult for racist elements of society to prosper, especially in an age where the average family unit bares many cultural traits and beliefs.
The Future for the Modern Relationship
So, the future for multiculturalism in society seems bright, regardless of those who continue to oppose both its purpose and its presence. As it is something that can have such a tremendous influence on the well being of social harmony, it will take a great deal of time and effort to flourish fully within the cities of the US and other western nations, and will also encounter many problems along the way. As long as multiculturalism continues to be supported by the government and the vast majority of fair minded citizens, then it will in time become an accepted part of social advancement.
