The US Government Facing Federal Shutdown

Of all the uncertainties that exist in the contemporary world, you would not include the function of your government as being amongst them. Regardless of the popularity of it’s actions or the results of their decision making processes, the government are omni-present in our day to day existence, making conscious and considered strides towards a state of sustained prosperity. However, as democratic and republican representatives failed to reach a budgetary agreement this week, the US is now facing up to the prospect of a partial federal shutdown.

The US government have until midnight on Friday to reach an adequate compromise, and ultimately present a clear and concise expenditure plan to ease the nation through its period of economic recovery. However, with warring political factions at odds over the course the country should take and who is responsible for the vast budget shortfall, an agreement seems to be moving further away from the grasp of those who seek to protect the citizens of the US.

An Need for Compromise

Significantly, both parties are opposed in exactly how to reduce the budget deficit, and which areas of public spending should be cut to negate the crippling economic shortfall. While this is understandable when you consider the conflicting principles of each party and their own individual interests, this verbal war of attrition is influenced by other less relevant factors. Of these, the apportioning of blame and responsibility for the nations fiscal woes appears as the most significant.

Ultimately, the issue of blame seems to be hindering the process of resolution, as individuals and political groups look to establish a semblance of credibility and enforce their solutions as both correct and viable. This creates little more than a petty and hugely irrelevant battle for supremacy, which directly effects the crucial requirements for communication and problem resolution. Unless this is moved aside and dealt with at a more opportune moment, it will dictate the course of the dialogue and damage any possibility for seeking out common ground.

A Curse of Democratic Rule

This type of blame culture and subsequent battle for power is an unfortunate consequence of strained democratic rule, where opposing factors in government take the opportunity to share their thoughts and opinion. Due to freedoms and the liberal nature of democratic government, there exists a due process of dialogue and passing legislation, which often makes creating agreeable budgets and laws an act of great difficulty. While the end result may be beneficial to society, the methodology used can be drawn out and challenging.

This is undoubtedly preferable to a totalitarian and oppressive rule, but does provide issues with regards to providing a strong leadership of society. Where a multitude of people and influences are allowed to contribute to important decisions, there is a greater scope for actions to be determined by personal feelings and opinions, with the potential to either perverse or delay to rightful course of action.

Occasionally however, there are circumstances which demand that self interest and individual opinion be put aside for the benefit of the nation as a whole, and the current budgetary shortfall is one such instance. As a situation of such importance for the country and its tax paying residents, it must be elevated above any other concern or issue, in order that they can move forward and build a strong and competitive economy. Without this display of selflessness by the representatives of the US, the issue will remain unresolved and lead to a state of federal impotence.

Maintaining the Integrity of Democracy

Though troublesome negotiations and legislation are an inevitable consequence of the democratic process, to counter them is to alter the course of democracy and its values. If the US is to continue practicing democracy in its purest form, these types of protracted budgetary discussions are to be expected. Of course, the current circumstances of the US are unusual in the extreme, and the hope remains that once resolved the nation will be able to take tentative steps towards prosperity.

Ultimately, a resolution will be reached simply because it has to be, and neither political faction will want to see any operation of the government forced into indolence. What should emerge is a determination to serve the country as well as possible in these difficult circumstances, and this should manifest itself through an amicable compromise that is both considered and delivered before Friday’s looming deadline. The servants of democracy may be facing a painstaking economic recovery, but they must surely not fail in the core purpose of protecting their citizens against its threat.
