Fifty years ago today, a quarter of a million Americans joined Martin Luther King, Jr. to march for a land of opportunity for everyone. But at DonorsChoose.org, we see evidence every day that their dream is not fully realized.
I wish I could say that the 65,000 students beginning school in Detroit next week will walk into classrooms that are bright, full of life, and stocked with supplies. I wish I could say that your zip code no longer determines whether you have access to AP English or proper science labs.
The opportunity gap persists but people are doing something about it. I remember chatting with my fellow teachers at our Bronx high school about our dreams for our students. We were frustrated to think that some of our best ideas for helping students learn—a classroom library, a field trip, a microscope for a science experiment—were just a few hundred dollars beyond our grasp.
I also remember what it was like when, thanks to the generosity of the first supporters on DonorsChoose.org, my colleagues began to see their ideas come to life. Each donor’s act of support liberated us to imagine new possibilities for our students.
Anyone can help close the educational opportunity gap. Start today by volunteering your time, learning about education reform in your city, or supporting a teacher in a low-income community. Join the ongoing march to give every kid a great education.
