Challenge #2
Typeset the first two chapters of "The Art of War" by Sunzi (Wikipedia). If you like to, typeset all chapters in addition. You will find the text at the end of this post.
Due date
I will create a thread on Thursday where you can submit your work, look at the work of others, praise them, give and receive feedback and discuss.
As the readers of /r/typography are scattered all over this planet, please pay attention to your local time.
The results thread will be posted on Thursday, 2013/09/19, 15:00 UTC.
You can convert UTC to your local time using this website
Some local times are:
PST: 8:00 a.m.
EST: 11:00 a.m.
Germany: 17:00 Uhr
Tasmania: 1:00 a.m. (Sorry Tasmanians, not sure how to solve this. Feel free to send me your work if you want to have it posted by me while you are sleeping.)
How to submit
Simply upload the typeset first two chapters and post the link in the thread on Thursday. You will probably want to upload PNGs and/or a PDF:
PNGs can be uploaded to imgur. The advantage of images is that others can look at your work in all its beauty from their phone, tablet or fridge with whatever reddit client they are using. Make sure that the images you upload are of high quality. Not too small, not compressed too much.
PDFs can be uploaded to some cloud storage (Dropbox, Google Drive, your server…). The advantage of a PDF is the combination of high resolution and small file size. You may wan to make sure that you are allowed to embed the fonts you are using.
Feel free to describe how you typeset the text:
What software did you use? Did you do anything that is easily overlooked?
What typeface is it?
What are the font sizes?
Don’t worry if you submit late, I’ll try to make the results thread sticky for a couple of days to reduce timezone handicaps.
Who can submit
Everyone. You do not need to be a professional typographer. This is a challenge for fun and for learning.
If you don’t have any commercial typesetting software, you could give Scribus a try which is free and open source.
The text
"The Art of War" can be retrieved via Project Gutenberg. There’s plain text, HTML and some other formats. (Please also read the first update below.)
Some things to consider
Ugh, lists!
Ugh, nested lists!
Ugh, some list items span several numbers!
Ugh, there are some very short lines!
Is it art or war? Do you typeset it for philosophers or for the military? Does this make a difference?
The text is ancient, should it look ancient? Should you put it on bamboo like this or like this?
Should you put the original title in there? If so, do you prefer simplified Chinese (孙子兵法) or traditional Chinese (孫子兵法)?
Well, it’s called a challenge for a reason.
What else
If you have any suggestions on how to improve this challenge, please comment.
If you have any suggestions for /r/typography challenge #3, please comment. You could even be the "host" of challenge #3.
Update
/u/caught_thought asked if it was okay to include the pinyin and use this source instead. Of course, that’s okay. Everyone who wants to typeset some beautiful pinyin, please do so!
