I finally got my apartment computer setup to my liking (until I move into a home and get a real server setup).
HTPC
This consists of
Panasonic TC-P50U50
Denon AVR-1612
Polk 25C Two-Way Center Channel
Polk Monitor60 Series II Floorspeakers
Polk PSW10 Subwoofer
NOTE: The speakers that flank the subwoofer that support the platform for the TV are old Sony speakers that are from the 80’s I acquired from my grandmother’s stereo system. They are not connected to anything and are merely conversation starters. Also, since I want to build a stand myself this seemed like the most appropriate way to support the television without looking cheap.
The centerpiece of my system is my HTPC in an Xbox360 case that I finally completed. I have detailed the build of the computer in a few posts on Reddit in the past (Build list on this link). Unfortunately, I fried the RF board to control the power up and LEDs on the front the Xbox. I was able to pick up a USB RF adapter for the controller though, which works pretty much the same.
This video demonstrates how I edited the shell to avoid loading Windows Explorer when I power up the computer and instead boot directly into XBMC. I decided on XBMC because I am more familiar with its used compared to something like PLEX, although I have enjoyed PLEX when testing with it in the past.
P-7805u "Server"
The second computer is my old Gateway P-7805u laptop. At the time of its release it was a MBP killer due to its low price point and incredible specs. Gateway even shipped out a number of lots with 17" 1920×1200 displays, which was incredible for me at the time. Since I have no need for this laptop anymore it acts as the server between my two Western Digital World Books and the rest of my home network. My photos WD (2x 1TB drives in RAID 1) attach through an eSATA port and my Multimedia WD (2x 2TB drives in RAID 0) attach via USB 2.0 (the main reason for my need for a real server). Despite the USB 2.0 connection I rarely see any lag issues between my HTPC and the playback of 1080 files over the network.
This setup lives in the laundry room next to my network setup, which is a basic NETGEAR wireless router with Gigabit ethernet that feeds to each computer via wired CAT5e cables. I decided to run a flat CAT5e cable to the Home Theater in the living room so I could easily pass it under the carpet to create a clean installation. Here you can see it entering the carpet near the door of the laundry room.
Workstation
The final computer is my Workstation on /r/buildapc. This is where I do the majority of the actual "work" I do at home, mainly editing photos/videos and doing some document creation. I rarely use this anymore as I am on the road for work almost every week and don’t get a chance to shoot as much as I used to. Still a great computer to come back to as it is rock solid and more than meets my needs.
So that’s my apartment setup. Not the most incredible or advanced setup, by any means, but it is great for my uses and is attainable without spending a fortune on equipment.
