Helping Open Doors to Students for "A Better Chance"

The need for access to quality education is greater than ever and gaps in academic achievement based on race continue. Many students of color are unable to realize their full potential because they lack access to quality educational experiences resulting in an inadequate pipeline of diverse leaders at the highest levels. “A Better Chance” significantly contributes to the pool of leaders of color who can compete effectively in schools, colleges and the workplace. More than 13,000 Alumni have walked through the doors of opportunity and into leadership positions in all sectors of industry, science and the arts with their support.

“Our mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.” says Janine Hunter, Corporate HR Manager, who spends her free time serving as a member of the parent planning and recruiting steering committees as well as helping with the care package events whereby the organization sends high school scholars in the Northeast region care packages.  “This little token can make a world of difference to a student who is away from home.”

Janine has been an active parent and participant in the regional “Parents-as-Partners” chapter ever since her daughter became a Scholar in the program last year.  “We believe that in order for our Scholars to be successful it is important for parents to be actively involved in the educational lives of their children. To this end, each region has a Parent-as-Partners group to which Janine has been a strong and dynamic supporter,” states Johnathan Gibson, Senior Program manager for the Northeast Region. “Janine’s steadfast commitment to our program and all of our Scholars continues to exceed all of our expectations time and time again.”

“Originally I just started volunteering to be in the know, but I enjoyed the work so much that I got more and more involved.  I honestly care for every single kid!” remarked Hunter.

As of July 1st, Janine has graciously accepted to further increase her involvement by agreeing to become one of the co-chairs of the “Parents-as-Partners” chapter in the New York Metro area.
