Hi there. I’m Daniel, better known as OfficialNerdCubed and I’m here to answer any questions you have about YouTube’s recent changes.

Quick Summary. YouTube has changed the way it’s Content ID system works. It’s supposed to be an automatic way of finding copyrighted footage but it’s now a system for abuse and fraud. Seemingly anyone can file a claim under any name and immediately remove monetisation from a video and divert it to them. The instant claim is filed, however inaccurate or false, that video generates money for someone else. And YouTube. YouTube still get the 45% cut no matter who owns it.

This has become news over the past week as having your channel partnered with MCNs (Multi Channel Networks, Think Machinima, Polaris and IGN) no longer protects you from this system. Also from January 1st all videos from "Affiliate" partners of MCNs (Essentially everyone but the top 1%) will not be able to monetise videos instantly and will have to wait for the system to scan the video. (Estimated to take between hours and days. If a video is given a copyright notice it can take a month to remove.)

Since the new system started I’ve been hit with 12 claims, all of which have been incorrect and all of which have cost me money. YouTube is screwing it’s creators to save the hassle of a DCMA takedown and it’s got such a monopoly it doesn’t care that it’s damaging an entire section of it’s users.

Any questions?

Edit: It’s 2am. I need to sleep. I’ll come back and answer more tomorrow. Thanks for the questions!
