When a country is at the mercy of fiscal or social constraints, it is inevitable that a faction of its citizens will react in an emotive manner. This is indicative of any society, where certain personality types are prone to the acts of irrational and impulsive behavior. However, while this is accepted as the consequence of enhanced stress and a challenged standard of living, recent statistics have suggested that an increasing number of hate groups are emerging throughout the US.
The term ‘hate group’ is a rather generic and vague media term, but in fact applies to several different demographics of society. These groups are essentially radical right wing ensembles, who generally stand against various types of government and government reforms. Patriot and Nativist groups are relevant examples active in contemporary American culture, and share the common if misguided notion that the US state is their primary enemy.
The Facts of Right Wing Groups
The statistics are indeed significant, and reveal that 2010 saw a vast 7.5 percent increase in the number of hate groups who operated within US boundaries. It is estimated that 1002 hate groups are now active and progressive in the country, and this is the first time since these statistics have been tracked that over 1000 individual groups have been recorded. This number is startling with regards to both its volume and its presence in a liberal society, and points towards an increasingly dissatisfied public.
The biggest growth was identified amongst Patriot groups, which are considered as conspiracy minded ensembles who directly oppose the federal government and their policies of rule. An estimated 300 groups of this nature were formed throughout 2010, which stood as a rise of more than 60 percent from the figures suggested in 2009, and has largely been attributed to the growing number of militias that were recorded in the same period.
Why Should Hate Groups Rise in the Current Environment?
The primary values and purpose of these groups is significant, and does much to reveal the current levels of mistrust and negativity that surround the present government regime. Although these entities are a distinct minority who base their beliefs upon tailored and often ill considered conspiracy theories, they are a clear reflection of less aggressive fractions of society, who themselves have grown disillusioned with slow economic recovery and continuing social issues.
If we are to assess this growing hostility towards the government, then we should look at the exact issues that cause it. Although the report, published by the Southern Poverty Law Center, references a struggling economy as one of the core reasons, there is a more worrying undertone of racial angst and tension that permeates the wording of the piece. This particularly refers to the way that multiculturalism is being handled by the US government, or alternatively the way in which minority groups are portrayed by propaganda and media reporting.
So while the current period of fiscal hardship is proffered as key to the development of hate groups, the issue of evolving racial demographics is an entirely more divisive and potential dangerous matter. Resentment that is born out of economic restriction is conditioned by changeable social environments, and subside once the equilibrium has been restored, whereas hostility towards a race or aspect of multiculturalism is prompted by a deep rooted principle of belief.
The Future of US Society
While people may point at the increasing levels of poverty and financial regression within the southern state belt line as the primary reason for the emergence of hate groups, this is a theory that does not consider the undeniable issue of racial tension throughout the US. This may be expected during the integration of different cultures into a single society, but this is an entirely different entity to the form of organized hostility currently on the rise in the nation.
If we consider the integration of cultures as integral to the growth of hate groups in the US, then the federal government will be forced to react and reinforce its principles of democracy. If the world is to have any chance of maintaining a peaceful global society, then multiculturalism must be enforced without restriction or exception in any circumstance, otherwise the concepts of hate and intolerance will prosper at the expense of unity.
