I was midway through a boring day when one of our VP’s walks in and tells me "Bill’s computer is possessed." I’ve seen a lot, but this would be my first computer possession. We head back to Bill’s office, where he shows us his open Word document. He and the VP both start telling me how he was just typing up a document, when random words started appearing on the screen. Sure enough, as they’re telling me this, I can see even more totally real-but-random words popping up on the screen. I ask them to leave so I can take a look at it, and it stops. Typical "it works when the IT guys is there?" ability, I wonder?
But then I notice the tiny "dictation mode: on" notification box in the top right….Not sure how he turned that on, but since it was untrained to his voice, it just made its best guess. And then when he called his boss in and they were talking about it, it happened even more.
I turned it off, went out of the office and told them I had exorcised the computer demons, and he could get back to his TPS report.
