Capitalism within a Democracy

As a budget agreement was finally reached at the 11th hour on Friday, so too the US nation breathed a collective sigh of audible relief. While public sector workers and the families of military representatives celebrated the late resolution, so too government officials assured citizens that they would learn from the lessons of a poorly administered budget. However, given the revelation that top senate officials would have continued to receive pay while those beneath them felt the force of any partial government shutdown, questions have been raised about the influence of capitalism within a democracy.

Capitalist Values in a Democratic Society

The idea that the powerful should continue to receive their pay while those who they serve are left temporarily without salary epitomizes the very worst of capitalism, where influence dictates the distribution of a nations wealth. This notion is troubling enough in a focused and dedicated democratic power, but it is even more worrying when you consider that these individuals in question were responsible for the prolonged budgetary negotiations in the first instance.

Now, this does not mean that capitalism or its principles are divisive in society, or entirely opposed to those which exist in democracy. After all, capitalism supports the freedoms of of enterprise and unlimited trade, and affords individuals the tools to design, create and operate their own business entity. Not only this, but such a concept gifts these individuals the opportunity to shape their own financial destiny, and take tentative steps to becoming the job creators of the next generation.

However, there are certain aspects of capitalism that contrast with the values which drive democracy, and these concern the distribution of wealth and power. For example, in the instance of who gets paid and who does not within the circumstances of a government shutdown, it is apparent that those who create the legislation are a faction who do not suffer from any subsequent economical hardship. In essence, this means that influential law makers are creating an environment that benefits themselves rather than the needs of a wider social demographic.

An Occasionally Incompatible Marriage

This creates a contrast and an occasionally uneasy marriage between capitalism and democracy. Whereas capitalism is driven by a selective few who have strived to garner both wealth and influence, and subsequently sees this power used in an entirely subjective manner, democracy is an evocation of government for the people by the people, and rests solely upon the principle that each individual has a fair and equal voice in any pertinent social issue.

Perhaps this point is significant, as while democracy is significant within society in the US, it is less applicable to the financially driven corporate world. This variation in where the concepts are applied means that both are able to subsist harmoniously within the boundaries of a nations rule, only to cross paths in situations where economics and the welfare of society are mutually interwoven. Where this does occur, there is the inevitable clash of individual needs with those of a greater majority.

This conflict could be witnessed in the recent budget discussions, especially as the prospect loomed for hard working military personal to lose their salary while senate officials continued to earn an ill deserved wage. Should this state of play have been allowed to develop, we would have seen an instance where those without political influence would have been punished by those who wield it, which would have seriously contravened the purpose and aspirations of a democracy.

Different Factions of the Same Rule

In many ways, capitalism and democracy are based upon the principles of freedom, which support the social fabric which binds the citizens of the US. However, whereas capitalism allows and encourages individuals to further themselves and develop wealth and influence for their own benefits, democracy is geared towards the creating an equilibrium between political powers and the individuals that they serve.

The fact that they serve different functions keep them largely compatible, although the unavoidable link between wealth distribution and the welfare of society means that they are bound to clash occasionally. What should be addressed are circumstances where this collision of principles can be avoided, such as the provisions for pay should the government be forced into partial closure. Although this course of action has been avoided in this instance, should the prospect arise again legislation should be implemented to protect public sector workers from baring the brunt of the financial consequence.

  1. I have been using Acai berry optimum for 11 days now and my appetite has decreased and my energy level has improved. I have lost 6 pounds since starting Acai berry. It is important for people to realize that it is a supplement, so you have to change your diet and you have to exercise. So far so good!!

  2. I did a search about golf and hardly found any specific details on other sites, but then great thing I found it here, seriously, thanks..

  3. Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  4. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  5. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  6. I have been surfing on-line more than three hours as of late, yet I by no means found any attention-grabbing article like yours. It’s lovely price sufficient for me. 9. This recorded a piece of me! Eagle Air is a novice looking to be free to stroll all the exhibitions “Life is to learn not to get …”I like this sentence, very healthy outlook on life: You do not get a satisfactory cause; is learned How closer to happiness. You do not get the victory; is to learn how to avoid failure. You do not get the final result you want; that things will not be satisfactory to learn …

  16. Assuming that skin cancer is not a concern, please factor the following points into your recommendation:. 1) Out of pocket costs, since cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance;. 2) The person contemplating the mole removal is a heterosexual male who wishes to have an appearance that is appealing to females;. 3) The risk of infections from such a procedure;. 4) The risk that scars that look worse than the moles might form as a result of the procedure;. 5) A relatively low threshold of pain;. 6) The chances of finding a really good dermatologist who really knows how to perform this procedure well;. 7) The length of time required for the skin to heal after the procedure;. 8) The moles in question are all smaller in circumference than a pencil eraser, are raised up less than the thickness of two quarters, are not dark in color, and are present on the arms, legs, and face..

  18. Virtually all of whatever you articulate is supprisingly accurate and that makes me ponder why I hadn’t looked at this with this light previously. This article really did turn the light on for me as far as this topic goes. But there is 1 issue I am not too comfy with and while I make an effort to reconcile that with the actual central theme of your point, let me observe exactly what all the rest of the readers have to point out.Well done.

  23. Starting each day care business provides for a great entrepreneurial opportunity if you value children. Perhaps it is the most wonderful thing you can try to generate profits. The length can range using a small internet operation at a shoe string budget for a large commercial center. Its for you to decide figure out the course of your organization – either choosing to remain small by creating work exclusively for yourself or growing into an enterprise with large revenue.

  26. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  27. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

  37. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
