To anyone fair minded who has the vision to see beyond their own generation, the concept of democratic rule is the only reasonable method of government. In essence, it is government for the people and by the people, and allows individuals within a society to elect their chosen political leaders while still retaining a voice and a right to protest. In theory, this should create a society of citizens who are entirely satisfied and comfortable with their nations rule, and one that is both progressive and in touch with each others needs.
However, there are issues with this ethos which lead to independent conflicts between individual factions of society and the government, which are being seen increasingly throughout contemporary USA. The main problem is that while democracy affords a voice to the society that it governs, it can not take into account each individual element of the population and the subsequent consequences of several subjective demands. This puts a strain on any liberal rule, as it is impossible to create legislation that satisfies everyone.
 

Fighting for Multiculturalism
Aside form the current events throughout the US, the are other underlying issues that support this theory. If we assess the continued strides multiculturalism, then we see a nation that is divided in its attitudes towards the concept, especially in specific geographically areas where both racial diversity and resource is minimal. Recent global events have only served to create even more conflict between those who support and those who disapprove of multiculturalism.
Although America has always featured a diversity of cultures, historically they have tended to congregate into different geographical areas within the country. This means that although alternative races groups subsisted within the boundaries of a single nation, they were not integrated together as effectively as they may have been. Subsequently, the idea of multiculturalism is still one which concerns certain individuals, who opposite its values and its place in contemporary America.

Part of the reason for this mistrust is the continued presence of global terrorism and religious extremism, which has claimed the lives of so many innocent parties since the turn of the century. Specific instances have served only to create a deep and inherent dislike between different cultures and religious bodies, meaning that they are more sceptical about subsisting alongside each other and concerned with the potential of reprisal. Although the majority of fair minded citizens see these acts as atrocities committed by a disruptive few, others see them as corporeal support for a single culture society.

Democracy as an Easy Target for Anarchy
Of course, the nature of democracy is liberal, and therefore individuals are able to use it as a foundation upon which to build religious and cultural intolerance. For a self serving individual who wishes to oppose the idea of multiculturalism, it is all too simple to speak candidly about the perceived perils of an integrated society, giving reference to global terrorism and acts of religious extremism in support of their opinion. Subsequently, democratic values are abused, and utilized as an easy medium for anarchy.
This is certainly the perception of hate and terrorists groups, who seek to use the privileges of democracy to perpetrate their intolerance. These groups could not function in the same way in a totalitarian government regime, as their opposition would be crushed with force and at a great considerable risk to their safety. In countries such as the US or the UK however, these elements are able to develop a civilized and articulate front in order foster their misgivings and racial prejudices.

 

Standing Firm in the Face of Hostility
While peaceful and civilized protests in the face of financial hardship and budget constraints are understandable, those which seek to oppose or prevent multiculturalism are an entirely different matter. This is because the concept of successfully integrating cultures into a single society would prove to be the ultimate achievement of democracy, and the US and other like minded countries must pursue this goal in the face of organized hostility.
Just because a country believes in the freedom of speech and thought, does not believe that it will not face conflict in the pursuit of its goals. Indeed, it is bound to face challenges to both its security and its style of government, and must accept that employing democratic principles does allow disingenuous elements to attempt to corrupt society. In terms of multiculturalism, no opposition should ever be allowed to destroy the ideal of how the world should exist as a single global community.
