I’m an art student at uni currently working with programming and other software based methods of creating art, and I’m interested in building a installation with various computers and monitors to display my work.

A technician was talking to me about there being a distinction between monitors which are safe and not safe to turn on without the case. He mentioned something about the fact that CRT monitors are incredibly dangerous without the case because of the electricity/lack of safety mechanisms? My memory on this conversation is fuzzy, so I was wondering if anyone can clarify what this distinction is so I know what to look for when potentially sourcing monitors to dismantle?

Also, would it be safe/feasible to have say, nine un-cased monitors in a 3×3 grid rigged and turned on essentially touching or at the very least very close to one another all turned on? What sort of precautions would I need to make something like this work without risking safety?

By extension, is it safe to run a computer without a case?

Any information in relation to this would be incredibly useful. Thanks!
