Civil wars do not end with foreign invasions. Iraqis will have to settle this dispute, all by themselves. There is going to be lots of blood shedding. But, unfortunately, there seem to be no other way out. This is how Catholics and Protestants settled their disputes. This is how U.S. and confederates settled their disputes. This is how it has always been settled. The crazy, emotional attachment to a religion, ideology, nationality, ethnicity, linguistic group or geographical location often makes people believe that they can and should subdue everyone else through the use of force. Situation gets worse when all the rival groups start thinking the same way.

It is very complicated in that region. Let’s have a look on all involved parties. There are religious extremists who believe that their religion and way of living is under serious threat by ever increasing Western cultural, media, political and military interventions. There is U.S. which must protect her strategic, economic, political and security interests. There is Iran which has interests in having a decisive influence in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. There is Turkey which is terrified by Islamic resurgence and the possibility of Kurdish state on its borders. There is Russia which must protect the Shiite regimes in the region in order to protect its interests. There is Syria which must take care of civil war led by of U.S., Al-Qaeda, ISIS and other extremist groups. And there is a government in Iraq which is corrupt, crony, weak and extremely divisive.

In the middle of deadly tug-of-war between all these interests Iraqis have lost about 1.5 million civilians, their country is destroyed and divided, economy is in shackles, finances are overburdened. Before U.S. attack on Iraq in 2003, they did have a brutal regime and dictator. But, there was integrity, harmony and peace. Generally speaking, there little kids did not have to wake up every morning in the midst of conflicts, bombings and crossfires.

Before attack in 2003 Iraqis did not kill even a single American. They did not turn out to have WMDs than what are they paying these prices for? A country which did not have any extremist organizations, at all, is getting infested by extremists. There is real possibility that it may not survive as a standalone nation. Threats to Iraq’s integrity are getting more and more obvious, and its division into three independent countries is becoming imminent. For what? And why? How do things change so much within eleven years?

Iraq had certain distinguishing factors which became a curse for it. At the top would be its vast oil resources and strategic position in Middle East. When Islamic Revolution in Iran through away the strongest U.S. based government in Middle East, and started creating problems for U.S. and Israel, a lesson had to be taught. They tried Pakistan. But, Pakistan already has very unfriendly India and Afghanistan. It could not afford to have another enemy on its borders. So, CIA turned over to Iraq. They got Saddam Hussein on board to attack Iran. Both Saddam and U.S. thought that together they can easily destroy the newly formed government in Iran.

Saddam was provided with large quantities of advanced military equipment and weapons. Iraqi military and intelligence got direct training and advice from American top notch experts. Saddam became such a favorite and CIA turned out to be so stupid that they even provided him technology for chemical and biological weapons. Just providing these weapons was not considered well enough for this loyal friend. Many experts believe that Iraq got its initial know-how of nuclear technology from Americans. Still the long war between Iran and Iraq did not settle anything between the two countries. It did not achieve anything significant except the serious devastation for both countries.

Iraq used those chemical and biological weapons against Iran. That was not a problem, of course, just like our use of atomic bombs against Japan. But, when Saddam Hussein failed to destroy Iran, he became useless for CIA. He was considered a threat by Israel anyways. So, U.S. started to abandon him, gradually, though. America’s support and his venture against Iran became a huge booster for Saddam’s already very dictatorial mindset. He used those chemical and biological weapons even against his own people. He continued to build nuclear weapons which he started building during the war with Iran, with the support of U.S.
This was totally unacceptable for Israel. So, Israel bombed and destroyed Iraq’s nuclear facility. By now, mainly due to his failure against Iran, and due to Israel’s dislike for him, Saddam lost the status of favorite ally for United States. But he literally worked for CIA, and fought a war mainly to serve U.S. interests. He believed that he may not be favorite, anymore, but, U.S. will at least not fight him. So, he decided go on a mission to expand his territory.
He attacked Kuwait. U.S. came to Kuwait’s rescue and kicked him out of there. He was really mad because he felt that he got deserted by his friend, big Bush. He did not expect this reward for his loyal services in past. He said really harsh words about big Bush, and allegedly, even, tried to kill him. So, he becomes a personal matter for Bush family. 9/11 provided little Bush a golden opportunity. Big oil companies were already scared by Saddam gradually taking away control over oil production and supply. He was becoming an increasing threat for Israel, too.
Although there was no Iraqi involved in 9/11, at all, he was blamed for developing WMDs. He was taken out by American military and then was hanged to death by an Iraqi court decision. Bush administration, nobody knows why, assumed that Iraqis would welcome them with flower bouquets. There is no doubt that Saddam was a ruthless dictator. But, assuming that Iraqis will prefer a foreign military over him was rather very simplistic. Bush claimed “mission accomplished” very early in the venture. We all are seeing that it is very far from anything that may be termed as “accomplishment”. Iraq, by any measure, is far worse than what it was under Saddam.
