The biggest barriers and walls between people and nations, created by Nationalism are, passports and visas. The official notions are stereotyped, as usual: Safety and security, limit the influx of immigrants, economy, jobs, financial burden. My friends, without barriers, the flow of people across the globe is very fluid and literally like water. When people move from less economically developed areas to the more developed places, they go where the jobs are and where they can be hired on better rates. Ironically, the people who migrate for economic reasons are not just the poorest, and least skilled and educated. This type of influx also involves highly skilled and educated people, and the people with high entrepreneurial acumen.

As a matter of fact, in the absence of barriers the entrepreneurial, highly educated and skilled people are more likely to migrate to high opportunity areas from low opportunity places. This is because the less developed places are less likely to be able to accommodate entrepreneurs, highly educated and skilled people due to lake of high level, high tech and advanced businesses and jobs. This is a well-known phenomenon, commonly known as “brain drain” and primarily effects less developed economies. So, economically, more advanced you are, more likely are you to benefit from unrestricted immigration.

When you give up one job for an entrepreneur, highly skilled and educated person than this person creates a number of jobs for other people around him or herself. On the other hand, less skilled and less educated immigrants help keep cost of production low, generating more products, services and exports, out of any given amount of resources. This also helps boost the economy and creates jobs, usually higher paying. Open border policies also boost trade and tourism, benefiting everyone involved. Open border policies benefit less developed economies, too, by influx of investments, expertise, technology, availability of high tech and more efficient products and services, and tourism.

So, when the passports and Visas were created, based on lame excuses, they interfered with global economic and financial growth, to a great extent. Other sentiments behind the introduction and enforcement of passport and visa policies are nationalistic, racial, ethnic, religious, geographical, and authority and control. In most cases, these policies do not benefit an average Joe, in any ways. These policies are rather damaging for common folks, in every part of the world. The adverse effects of passports and visas are far broader and deeper than just the economic damage.

These cause what is now termed as illegal immigration and smuggling. People who otherwise might have been just immigrants become illegal immigrants, and imported goods and services become smuggled goods and people. So called, illegal immigrants are the leading targets of abuse by employers and criminals, worldwide. One of the major reason given for passports and visas is to protect the jobs and wages. Unfortunately, these have totally opposite effects. What happens is that the so called illegal immigrant is very likely to work at a lower wage than an immigrant would demand if he or she did not have the label of “illegal”.

This makes illegal immigrants much cheaper and preferred workers. As a result of this it becomes very hard for citizens of the country to compete with illegals for jobs, and even if they get a job they have to work at a lower wages and benefits compared to what they may have got if the immigrants were not illegal. Also, illegal immigrants have to live in shadows and they are in continuous fear of getting caught and deported. Under this insecurity and fear they are very likely to get involved in criminal activity or fall into the hands of criminals.

Border restrictions like passports and visas, tariffs and duties, prohibition of import of certain goods and services like drug and prostitutes causes lots of violence, and criminal and gang activity. It also criminalizes the users of these goods and services, and puts citizens at great risk, especially the younger population. For example, millions of people, especially youth are involved in drugs and prostitution in United States, and are the leading cause of U.S. having the highest incarceration rates, in the whole world, even higher than Russia, China, North Korea, and Cuba where political persecution is supposed to be very high.
These restrictions cost lots of money to tax payers, too, and are one of the leading reasons for having bigger governments. Expenses like border patrol, customs and excise, police, jails and correction facilities, and healthcare become staggeringly high due to these restrictions. Carriers and lives of millions of young people are ruined because of lifelong criminalization. No one benefits except the big governments. Governments use these laws as an excuse for taxation and tariffs and different types of fee. For example, passport and visa fee. Governments also get the excuse to spend and grow many related branches like customs, police, jails and correction facilities, border patrol and trade and commerce regulating authorities.
All this is done at the cost tax payers who are already loosing because of these policies. It is like we are required to buy the poison for our own executions. The notion that tighter border restrictions make us safer is just an illusion created by corrupt politicians and corporate media. These policies only buy higher revenues for government and more advertisements for media. For us there is nothing except loss. The human, social, ethical, moral, economic and individual cost is too high.
The only viable and effective solution is freedom and liberty, for all men, as they are created equal by God. We should demand, if someone wants to come here to create jobs for us, let him or her come. Immigrants must not be criminalized and made illegal. Let them legally do the jobs they qualify for, so that the wages are not suppressed, and they do something productive for the society instead of committing crimes and violence. Government must also cut the size and spending on enforcement agencies like customs, police, jails and correction facilities, border patrol and courts. Imported cheap, goods and services help keep our cost of living low.
