Some of you may be aware of a few recent threads that have been made that have degenerated into the "you guys cheat" "no you guys cheat" “you’re racist” “no you’re racist” type arguments that are typical of a lot of cricket boards on the net. It’s fair to say that the vast majority of the subscribers here get rather annoyed by such threads because they do nothing for good discussion about the game, and we’ve had a lot of requests to do something about it to prevent hateful discussion becoming commonplace in r/cricket.
Taking a look at some other sports sub-reddits and it seems to be a pretty common stance for the mods to take action to prevent such things. With that in mind, the new “Law” is as follows (borrowing the wording from r/nba a bit):
No Hate/Flamebait threads – Sledging and banter is part of being a cricket fan, but it’s possible to do this and still be friendly. Making an entire thread specifically to trash talk or attack one team, one player, one administrator, one fanbase, or one country is overboard. If you make posts or comments that are specifically designed to promote a flame war this will be considered trolling and will be removed.
Controversial stuff happens in cricket and people get passionate about it. That’s cool, we understand, and will probably be a bit more lenient in times of “breaking drama” provided the Laws are still followed.
What we aim to avoid is people specifically digging up “old dirt” and extrapolating it to attack entire countries or teams. At the end of the day, if you’re from a major cricketing country you really don’t have a leg to stand on when attacking others. Every country has had their share of controversy and will continue to do so. There’s just no point slinging mud all day about it.
