Subscribe to /r/food, /r/foodhacks and/or /r/breadit. Then just check out recipes as they come through. I’m not a great cook or baker by any means, but I have found things that are in my skill level. When you find something print it, save it, whatever it for later. As there are times when you make something, make it. Surprise your wife with vanilla latte cupcake, iced with cappuccino buttercream for her birthday. Make cinnamon rolls. Make a two ingredient pumpkin cake. This morning I used a squeeze bottle to make character pancakes. Seriously if I can do it, you can do it.

Bonus points: Get the kids involved with you. Even if "helping you" is just sitting in the kitchen. Talk them through what you are doing. As they get bigger let them dump in ingredients. Let them mix, etc.
