The Relevance of Marriage in Modern Times

Since 2006, it has been reported that an increasing number of US couples have cohabited together despite being unmarried. The estimated number of unmarried couples who share lodgings has fluctuated between 5 and 6.4 million in the last 4 years, but regardless of the exact quantities the trend is leaning towards an average increase year on year.

These statistics and the ever publicised ascent of the divorce rate (which most experts suggest is currently estimated at between 45 and 51 percent) have drawn sharply into focus the relevance of marriage in the modern era. There are various factors which deter couples from marriage and matrimony, from financial concerns to the more fundamental issue of social trends and they way that marriage is perceived by the younger generation.

Times of Financial Hardship

Though many financial experts suggest that the number of couples who seek divorce actually falls during times of economic depression, this is partly due to the fact that fewer couples decide to wed through the same circumstances. As costly and as complicated as a divorce can be, the average wedding cost for a US service and reception is $20,000, and many couples simply cannot afford this or are loathe to spend such huge sums on a single day in their lives.

In terms of finance influencing whether couples intend to marry or not, it needs to be remembered that times of economic hardship also affects the cost of living, fuel prices and the value of housing and properties. Should a couple be fortunate enough to possess $20,000 or more within their personal bank accounts, then they are far more likely to invest this capital in a property or a savings bond than a wedding day and celebration.

Given this, the continued global recession is certainly forcing the traditional concept of marriage into irrelevance. Of course, a couple have an option of arranging a smaller and more affordable wedding to celebrate their union, but the couples that do wish to wed are unlikely to compromise on their dream day and expectations to facilitate a more cost-effective outcome. They are much more likely to defer the proposed date of the day until the economy has stabilized and money is far less of a concern.

Marriage in its Social Context

Economies will always falter, and marriage and divorce rates will often fall in line with this trend. A more worrying issue that affects the declining number of wedding services held in the US each year is the place of matrimony within modern society. It is no longer the accepted norm in civilization for a couple to undertake courtship and then marriage, and the gradual changes in the way relationships are conducted and the ensuing perception of marriage has left its entire existence in jeopardy.

It has to be remembered at this point that children are influenced primarily by the behaviour and conduct of their parents, who are in turn governed by their own set of principles and circumstances. As an increasing number of infants born through the 1990’s and the turn of the century emerged into broken relationships or unmarried unions, this practice has slowly but surely become the acceptable and most presented face of modern relationships. As these children have grown and become young adults, they have taken the examples set to them through their formative years and used these to develop a passive and skeptical perception of marriage.

Even for those who are not completely against the idea of marriage as an entity, the modern ethos presents and entirely different problem. Couples are, in the absence of engagement or definite long term direction, living together for a number of years before even considering marriage. Though many say this is sensible practice prior to wedlock, it can prove to be the death knell for more incompatible unions, as couples are led to the realization that they cannot cohabit the same space in peace and harmony. This then leads to separation, and the concept of marriage and finding a life partner drifts further into insignificance.

Can Marriage Recapture its Sense of Majesty?

Marriage, at its best, is the durable meld of two soul mates who are equipped to spend the entire remainder of their lives together. In its worst cases of separation and divorce, however, it breeds contempt, bitterness and undeserved levels of cynicism. The last 20 years have unfortunately exposed a young and impressionable generation to increasing levels of marital discord and breakage, leaving them to grow into functioning adults with a grim and unfavourable perception of the entire entity. This, coupled with the unfortunate and persistent decline of the global economy, has forced the notion of marriage to lose much of its relevance and lustre over the last 4 years.

The issues that face society are whether it can reinstall the majesty and significance of marriage in the modern social circumstance, and if so then how it can achieve this aspiration? The decline of interest in marriage may be specific to the current generation of young adults, but it must be remembered that it has not reduced the numbers of children that are being born into unmarried relationships. Therefore, the US is faced with a secondary generation of children being born with ever less respect for marriage, and in some cases even the potential of it as a viable or necessary option. Governments insist that marriage remains a core fabric in the weave of civilized society, and they are keen to reinforce its relevance. However, unless they act soon, there is a serious danger that marriage will not only become even less popular amongst couples, but also become an ever more redundant notion.

  1. I dont know anything about Tim Tebows personal life, but the correct name of the girl in that second picture (the bikini picture) is Lucy Pinder, not Lisa.

  2. 1. The opening scene sets the stage, for the humor that is to follow.2. The movie has been described by reviewers as a typical British,stiff-upper lip attempt to deal will all sorts of adversity, but Ithink it would apply to any nationality. Imagine yourself in each ofthe characters shoeswouldntt you react the same way? Althoughcertainly not as well as these professional actors/actresses did. 3. Ilove the structure of the movie. It all takes place in one amazing day. There are two physical objects that appear on and off throughout themovie: the casket and the pills. Many people get directly involved inthese objects, so they tie the movie together..having two objects tiesthe movie even stronger than if there were just one object. 4. Thetiming of a few little scenes is perfect: Howard has just struggled topush up Uncle Alfie (what a perfect name!) to the front steps, whenJustin (who has deserted Howarddidnt help him at all) steps in,pushes Uncle Alfie, and gets a thanks from Daniel. HA! Then theres thefinal scene dealing with how people wish that Robert would deliver theeulogy, when Daniel speaks to his wife, Jane. After he states to herthat he deserves to give the eulogy, a couple walks by and says howunfortunate that Robert isnt giving the eulogy. 5. The expressions ontheir faces: Justins unbelievably scrunched up forehead, Marthasconcentrated "baby-talk" to Simon, explaining to him how he has tobehave, Howards grimace grin when walking to Daniel and Robert, totell them the bad news. 6. The character-realistic responses, likeSandras nasty comment about Jane smudging the casket, or Danielstelling Jane that no, I havent called about the flat, after hesgetting overwhelmed and he knows what is on her mind. Havent you metsomeone like Jane? Or told someone to stop bringing up somethingbecause youve got a bigger thing on your mind? 7. Simon. His openingline about how he never knew someone who could hate him so much, setting the stage for his nervousness. His incredible acting under theinfluence of the drug. His reaction to the 8 hour period of how long itwill last. The "Si" (Martha), "Mon" (Simon) banter at the bathroomdoor. Just amazing acting. 8. The British slangexpressions/wordsthat were new to me. 9. The drug helps keep the action going in theright direction, and preventing other logical things from taking place.Eg, Peter could shout out that hes being held prisoner, but hes toodrugged. He could attempt to flee, but he ends up jumping up and down.It makes Simon imagine the casket moving, and latter allows him to sayhe was right the first time (although at this point, hes becomesaner). 10. "My Father was an extraordinary man" line gets repeatedseveral times, initially demonstrating the nervousness of Daniel, laterto begin what turned out to be an ad-hoc and much better eulogy. Andthis was a nice extra touch, that Daniel we see, as we had hoped, is agood speaker/writer. 11. Every actor and actress plays their partperfectly, rather emphatically. By that I dont mean loudly, but kindof stretching it to an extreme perfection fitting the specificsituation. Daniel is quietish, Uncle Alfie is loud, Howardworried/harried, Justin is sleazy, all to a little extra degree, whichsimply makes you quite aware of what they are going through. 12. Theconcluding, everyone is gone, scene, with Daniel stretched out on thecouch. After such a long day, it was nice to end the movie so relaxedand Robert showing a good side. But wait, its not really over! Onelast bit of humor!

  3. Hey! I’m at work browsing your blog from my new iphone 3gs! Just wanted to say I love reading through your blog and look forward to all your posts! Keep up the fantastic work!

  4. The discussion of interest is well, interesting. It seems our money is created by debt. New money is added into the system only as principal on a loan. When the loan is paid back the principal disappears and so does the money in the system (that is before it gets loaned out again in fractional reserve banking). As such, the only money working about in the economy is principal. If that is true, then where does the money come to pay interest? Is this why Christianity used to despise interest and Islam still does (selectively that is)? And even though Jews charged interest, didnt they also have Jubilee years where people were made whole (debts forgiven)? Please expound on this for us!

  5. Have you noticed that lately Brad and Angie have often forgone the spray on tan whereas Jen always has hers. I think Angie looks gorgeous. You are just assuming that failure to get a sprayed on tan means that her looks have changed. What would Jen look like without hers?

  6. @13/ BSK Says: “Lawrence – Mays supposedly said he would have gone for 30/30, 40/40, and even 50/50 if he knew it was going to be a big deal…”

  7. (RTTNews) ABC has responded to rumors that it may be cancelling the long running soap opera, All My Children, due to low ratings. A network rep did not give them credence.

  10. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

  11. His college records probably show him as a foreign exchange student from Kenya or Malaysia. If he was born in Hawaii, he would have already shown his birth certificate. How could anyone have voted for someone that has no verifiable history? You cant hardly get a job at Walmart with a background check anymore.

  12. brilliantly insightful article. If only it was as easy to implement some of the solutions as it was to scan and nod my head at each of your points 😛

  30. Exceptional post however I was wanting to know if you could write a litte more on this topic? I’d be very thankful if you could elaborate a little bit more. Thank you!

  31. Virtually all of what you point out is supprisingly appropriate and it makes me ponder why I hadn’t looked at this with this light previously. This piece truly did turn the light on for me as far as this subject matter goes. However there is 1 position I am not necessarily too comfortable with and while I try to reconcile that with the core idea of your point, let me observe just what the rest of your visitors have to point out.Nicely done.

  32. Actually, helping American families with healthcare, education, housing and Labor unions is Social Democracy. Giving trillions to bankers is Fascism and George Bush started it and now we are stuck with the bill. Seeing what capitalism has done for us maybe we should rethink our strategy.

  33. We stumbled over here coming from a different page and thought I may as well check things out. I like what I see so i am just following you. Look forward to looking over your web page yet again.

  34. Howdy! Do you know if they make any plugins to safeguard against hackers? I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked hard on. Any suggestions?

I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The design and style look great though! Hope you get the issue resolved soon. Kudos

  38. Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

  40. If you ask me, a Lock out is not in the best interest of the owners, players or the fans. Owners will lose a tremendous amount of money. Players will not get renegotiated salaries, that are total out of control at the top selected players and the fan will not get to see football. Wake up everyone, have you seen the news on how the economy is these days. Greed by owners and players has somehow become out of control when negotiating salaries. Both owners and players at the top of the the NFL have, in my opinion have done very well. The fan is the person that is suffering. Lock out who cares maybe I will save money for something more important, by not going to a NFL event. Then owners and players both will be suffering if fan support disappears.

  41. the cowboys loss to the giants is a sign of things to come, they will LOSE to san diego next week, get DESTROYED by the saints, go to washington where the redskins finally win a close game and finally get finished off by the eagles and go 8-8 and miss the playoffs. [and dont even start to say that the cowgirls will beat the saints because of what washington almost did because if i remember clearly the skins were a missed field goal away from upsetting the cowboys] all in all dallas is an overrated and over hyped pathetic team.

  42. Hi there are using WordPress for your site platform? I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started and create my own. Do you require any coding expertise to make your own blog? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  43. Hey there! I’ve been following your website for some time now and finally got the courage to go ahead and give you a shout out from Humble Tx! Just wanted to tell you keep up the great work!

  44. That is exactly why they dont demand we pay them right now. It would skyrocket the value of their dollar, and all their cheap knick knacks they sell here would quadruple in cost, and no one here would buy them, and their economy would go to hell in a hand basket. You are correct.

  45. My dear sisters I thought I would add a few thoughts hereI have been following along each day. I so appreciate you and your sharing! The Lord is using this study to warm my heart at the fire of Gods love as Dee mentioned as we looked at Psalm 3. He has shown me that the feeling of being stuck that I had for a long time was actually about not TRUSTING Him after a series of life events that left me wondering what was next! My own cancer, my dear mom passing away, a dear brother in law tragic fatal motorcycle crash, my husbands bloot clot, our rear end collison resulting in on going neck and back injuries.I had a lot of anger and frustration although I didnt realize until our study together herethats not an easy thing to admit! Slowly I am feeling warm and loved again! The Psalms and songs are quieting my soul and I run to them in the night or whenever satan would try to whisper his lies to me again.. The Words soothe, comfort and heal while He murmurs love to me.Thank you so much Dee for your wonderful book, your truly heartfelt sharing and this great study with you dear sisters! It has been God sent for me!

It is now and again perplexing to just find yourself releasing ideas which often some others might have been making money from. And now we consider we now have the blog owner to be grateful to because of that. The entire explanations you have made, the easy web site navigation, the relationships you will give support to engender – it’s many incredible, and it’s aiding our son and us do think the concept is excellent, and that’s seriously indispensable. Thank you for the whole lot!

  49. Good day everyone! Outstanding site, even though not every little thing is actually functioning right! But oh well as that is certainly up to this website owner to fix … Anywho, what I decided to talk about is this webpage I just ran into (Shan Hai Jing) which implies that true long term relationship is possible with whose who are born on the same day of the year as you, since everybody born on the exact same date are the same! The idea appears like a bunch of numerological garbage to me, however I checked a couple of of their demonstration video clips and a few of the psychological portraits match to people I know closely. I think that their En pronunciation could be much better, but oh well, if they genuinely have executed their research as they claim and also have proof this could one hundred percent change our lives and the way we look for partners! Take a look.

  50. If you really want you can look the other way and not talk about it. Don’t give up your morals for anything. Generally this will lead to a mistaken and unproductive life.

    1. I agree, morality and standards are crucial to a worhtwhile and productive life. Please, visit us again, and thank you for your support and comments to date.

  54. Greetings pals! Good quality website, although not everything is working in the proper way! But hey that is up to the administrator to deal with… Anywho, what I wanted to share is this internet site I just now found that says that real compatibility is possible with whose who are born on exact same date of the year as you, because everyone born on exactly the same date are alike! It seems like a bunch of astrological crap to me, but I checked out some of their demo material and some of the descriptions correspond to those people that I know. I think that their En pronunciation could be better, but oh well, if they really have done their research and have proof this could totally change our lives and the way we look for partners! Take a look, dudes.

  55. I love reading your site, the articles are generally really informative and the way in which you lay every thing out makes it easy to comprehend. I do not ordinarily comment however I decided I ought to at least thank you for doing an extremely good job. Thanks and keep up the great work.
