Any story that concerns he sexual abuse of a child is tragic in its composition, regardless of the perpetrator or their number of youthful victims. However, there are cases which push the limits of human comprehension, especially those where the perpetrator was in a position of trust or respectability. This issue epitomises the importance of regulating these criminals when they are active within society, as they are naturally drawn to jobs or occupations where they are able to interact with children and minors.
With this in mind, it is something of a surprise that many former priests accused of child abuse are able to live unmonitored across the states of the US, despite the fact that many have admitted to their crimes at various junctures in time. The reason for this is that their crimes have either remained unproven in law or were conducted so long ago that the statute of limitations had expired long before the victims cam forward and shared their stories. Subsequently, these offenders are allowed to live without restrictions or supervision, regardless of the potential dangers to society.

Those who are seeking justice and their legal representatives are looking to see information on these priests and their whereabouts enter the public domain, in the interests of public safety and well being. However, the church are set to fight this campaign, looking to impose limits and sanctions on the release of related files or data on those accused of perpetrating abuse. This debate is set to rage, with neither party keen to afford any ground to the other, as private investigators work alongside prosecutors to locate the exact whereabouts or circumstances of the 233 accused.
It is disturbing in this age of awareness and knowledge that some of these individuals can not be traced, and even more so that those who can are allowed to live unmonitored. This is directly opposed to the interests of society at a whole, and serves only to protect those who have committed wrong and pose an inherent threat to societies most vulnerable members. The position of the church is of insignificance when it comes to parents who wish to protect their children, as governments and justice officials must serve the majority of their people rather than a selected few.
Even for those who argue that people can change and learn from their indiscretions, many of these accused perpetrators have not faced justice for their actions, either through law or the entity of religion that claims to serve God and His followers. Secondary to this, this way of thinking completely misunderstands the nature of child abuse and those who perpetuate it, as it is often a compulsion committed by those who can not help themselves. This means that it is not a crime that individuals commit through choice, and that many will re offend over a certain period of time.
A Public Affair
If we are to balance the story, there is no guarantee that all of these reported cases are true, and there must still be a due process in order to determine who is guilty and who may be falsely accused. But given the evidence, we must consider that many of the accused are harboring guilt for their actions, especially considering the fact that over 80 of the original 233 cannot be located and at least 4 fled the American borders to Mexico and beyond. With these considerations in mind, it is imperative that these papers are released and the victims receive some much deserved justice.
If the church is allowed to dictate the terms of any information released, then those who govern society are failing their people and children who were or are two young to protect themselves against the evils within the world. This would be a travesty for two separate generations of minors, both for one which has already suffered at the hands of abuse and one which is left at the mercy of unpunished and unmonitored sex offenders. Not only this, but it would vindicate the Churches original handling of the situation and their ultimate ineffectiveness in dealing with the offenders.
Gaining Strength Through Social Unity
In much of contemporary western culture, there is an alarming trend where the rights of criminals are often considered as the equal of those who they violate, and any failure of justice to publish information and bring these offenders to justice only serves to compound their victims anguish. In this instance, American society and its elected rulers must gather a strength through unity, and demand that the public are made aware of the necessary information so that they can protect their families and that the victims suffering need not have been in vain.
After all, if those who are seeking justice can achieve their aim, then the wider public will be informed and a little safer in their day to day existence. While the publishing of previously private and censored information concerning the perpetrators can not change what they have endured, it will at least provide them with some comfort that their efforts have secured an end reward. The victory for society as a whole would be far more significant in terms of its wider reach, as it would make a statement about abuse and how it will not be tolerated in civilization, especially where perpetrators are protected by their status or social standing.

Today is only Day 5, but yesterday was hard. The first four days I felt pretty good and a sense of relief. I felt I was making the right choice to give up pot but somehow without pot and alcohol life just seems grey. I used to look forward to smoking pot and really enjoyed it. Ironically, I don’t feel a whole lot different without it – I think I had built up so much tolerance I wasn’t really getting that high, but without it I am more anxious and irritable. Unmotivated. I just hope today is easier.
