News Corporation And It’s Culture

James Murdoch, son of Rupert Murdoch, President and CEO of News Corporation, testified to a judge-led investigation and “began his testimony Tuesday by insisting he had no idea how widespread the practice of intercepting private voicemails was at the News of the World, the sensation-seeking tabloid that tapped into the cell phone of a kidnapped teenager who was later found slain.” as reported by Los Angeles Times. It is unconceivable that such a deep and widespread culture of hacking which prevailed at News Corp. subsidiary, News Of The World, for so long, was not in his knowledge. This just provides another proof regarding the loopholes present in white-collar crime laws, throughout the world, including United States. These loopholes let top government and multinational corporate officials get away from any criminal charges, just by saying that they didn’t know it was happening. We have seen this time and again, in United States, United Kingdom and many countries, worldwide, that in almost every serious criminal investigation and charges against a corporation and / or a government, the little guys get caught and punished, while the big ones get away just by denying the charges. This is when most crimes committed by governments and big corporations, never even make it to general public and big media reports, hence, they are never charged for those. If, by chance, the involvement of the top executives is too obvious and public, cannot be denied and they must be charged and punished by law, they still have the option of getting “pardoned”. If that is not possible either, for serious political implications or else, mostly, all they get is a tiny slap on hand like, few hundred or few thousand dollars fine or even better, the warning. If a hungry child steels bread from a store, he or she goes to jail, but, these white-collar criminals who potentially effect and mess up the lives of millions of people and families around the world, by their so called “white collar crimes”, can get away with virtually every thing. Apparently, these loopholes in white collar crimes are put in place and maintained intentionally. Rich multinational corporations and politicians sold out to their lobbies have no problem with these laws. My question is: Why there still exist a distinction between so called white color and blue collar crimes, even in democratic societies, where everyone is supposed to have equal rights and privileges. These laws were made in feudal societies to help and protect feudal lords and their families. Were these laws not supposed to be extinct with the evolution of democratic societies?
This is exactly what happened in 2007-2008 U.S. housing crisis, market crash and global recession. Have you heard any of CEOs or top executives of the banks, financial institutions, insurance companies, investment banks and real estate lenders going to jail? At least, I haven’t! On the other hand, you must have known that they got trillions of dollars of tax payer’s and borrowed money, which us and our future generations are going to pay back with interest? You must have also heard that they got millions of dollars in bonuses and golden parachutes, instead. Why in the world there is such a huge discrepancy between punishments for blue collar and white collar crimes? People with blue collar crimes get heavy punishments, while people with white collar crimes get rewarded with public money, instead of going to jail?
This is because the uncontrolled involvement of money in politics and political processes, rich and powerful corporate lobbies and corporate owned media, seriously compromise our perceptions and we keep misusing our greatest democratic power and weapon of vote, in the favor of crooks and pimps. We keep re-electing the same people who have breached our trust, time and time again, just because they have huge amounts of money provided by corporate lobbies, with which they can run intensively negative campaigns on big corporate media to distort out image of good, honest and qualified competitors. Unfortunately, the qualified and honest politicians and media, do not get any support from these lobbies. So, they are always short of money and could not counter or fight the negative campaigns against them, run by millions of dollars of corporate money.
Let me brief you on just some of the facts about News Corporation criminal investigation, so that you can have an idea of how broad and deep is the extent of this criminal behavior which was going on for so long. Then, you can decide yourself. It is up to you, whether after learning about these undeniable facts, you decide to not sit aside and do something about the growing influence of money on politics and big media. The best way to do this is by using your votes in elections at every level, federal, state, city and county, based on comprehensive and authentic information and by raising awareness on social media, forum and discussions. You can also let your elected officials know that you are not going to tolerate this type of behavior and if they are involved in getting money from any of these lobbies, they will lose your vote.
In accordance with Wikipedia article “News International phone hacking scandal” employees of News Of The World were charged with:
“engaging in phone hacking, police bribery, and exercising improper influence in the pursuit of publishing stories. Investigations conducted from 2005–2007 concluded that the paper’s phone hacking activities were limited to celebrities, politicians and members of the British Royal Family. In July 2011, it was revealed that the phones of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, relatives of deceased British soldiers, and victims of the 7/7 London bombings were also accessed, resulting in a public outcry against News Corporation and owner Rupert Murdoch. Advertiser boycotts contributed to the closure of the News of the World on 10 July, ending 168 years of publication.”
The same article also states that:
“The inquiries led to several high-profile resignations, including Dow Jones chief executive Les Hinton; News International legal manager Tom Crone; and chief executive Rebekah Brooks. The commissioner of London’s Metropolitan Police Service, Sir Paul Stephenson, also resigned his post. Former News of the World managing editor Andy Coulson, former executive editor Neil Wallis, and Brooks were all arrested. Murdoch and his son, James, were summoned to give evidence before a parliamentary media committee.”
