One of the facets of contemporary existence is the fast and unchecked pace of technological and scientific progress, which has continued unabated through the last two decades. While this has created many advantages in terms of engineering solutions and the development of treatments for specific ailments, it has also had a tremendous impact in the methodology that individuals use to communicate and undertake daily chores. The benefits or otherwise of these practices are less well defined, and could in some cases to be detrimental towards society.
While this ever quickening pace of advancement has undoubtedly delivered many positives towards the standard of living within the US, its nature is one that has the potential to leave may individuals in its wake. This is largely because the speed of its evolution creates a wide and cavernous gap between generations, especially with regards to the way that they interact and their perceptions of work, crime and other prevalent social issues. Subsequently, it is harder for parents to educate their children and instill relevant values in them.
An Issue of Communication
For example, if we consider the advent of social networking sites and contemporary media, then we see a mode of interaction that has developed vastly over the last decade or so. It is arguably the premier method of communication for most teenagers and young adults, and is becoming ever more influential as these sites are enhanced and improved upon further. While becoming increasingly relvant amongst youngsters however, its pace of progression has made it almost impossible for the elder generations to follow, resulting in a serious discrepancy to the understanding between parents and their children.
This is an inevitable consequence of change, especially in instances where it is so swift and captures the imagination of a specific geneartion and age demographic. While this grouping of societies members are swept away and fully consumed by a particualar change, the other is left sidelined and in its wake, and a significant chasm develops between these different social groups. Therefore, although parents want to understand social media and teach their children in how to use it responsibly, they are often unable to do this effectively and ultimately left feeling adrift of their childrens motivation.
The Consequence of Social Chasms
It is a well accepted fact that children are reliant upon the verbal and corporeal examples set by their parents to develop behavioral trends, and a close relationship between the two factions is crucial in facilitating this. As social media and the online revolution contiue to evolve and revolutionise the way in which young adults communicate, so too the levels of interaction between them and their parents become reduced and less effective. This is a dangerous portent, and could be detrimental to the future of social conduct and values.
Where less and less interaction exists between elders and youngsters, the inevitable consequence is that children seek their lessons and guidance from contemporaries and online resources. This can never be a good thing, as it does not allow them to borrow from the experience of those who love them and have in depth experience of life and social situations. So, while the technological revolution opens up new avenues of interaction and resource, it does little to support established modes of communication and bring them forward into the 21st century.
Maintaining the Contact Between Generations
It may not seem like it, but the maintenance of a close and genuine contact between the generations is becoming increasingly crucial, especially as society grows ever vulnerable to anti social behavioral patterns and conduct. This contact can bridge the gap between any interaction or communicative issues, and ensure that the younger generation can not only learn from their elders but also share any concerns or trepedations that they may have with them.
It is the responsibility of older individuals to adapt to and move with the pace of change, especially in terms of maintaining inherently close links with their children or youngers relatives. The duty of any guardian is to take a keen and comprehensive interest in their child’s activities and behavior, and use their own example and wisdom to shape and guide them in their decision making processes. In an age where social media dominates interaction and contemporary function, the elder generation must develop a comprehension of the resource in order to keep pace with the progression and maintain a social equilibrium.
