Description

This conference will highlight findings in forthcoming Institute of Medicine reports, The Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Trafficking of Minors and Understanding Child Abuse and Neglect, and focus on awareness, identification, education, and practical strategies. The conference will provide opportunities for collaboration with the hopes of sharing and creating fresh resources for those serving children and adolescents.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the conference, participants will be able to:

Day 1: Child Abuse and Neglect:

Practitioners will be familiar with state-of-the-art information on child abuse and neglect and acquainted with resources for recognizing, reporting and treating child abuse according to evidence-based guidelines

Obtain an appropriate history in suspected child abuse cases and accurately document abuse in medical records.

Recognize short-term and long-term consequences of abuse on cognitive development, and recommended treatment modalities

Day 2: Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors

Explain estimated scope, risk factors for and drivers of the problem of human trafficking and the psychological, health, and social consequences.

Utilize interviewing strategies and knowledge of how sex trafficking victims may present to assess and identify victims and promote their ethical treatment

Describe various educational, prevention, mental health, legal, and social services interventions and responses targeted to human trafficking victims and refer/report accordingly
