TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 10, 2013) — The University of South Florida again ranks as one of the nation’s top "up-and-coming" universities, according to the latest list compiled by U.S. News & World Report for its 2014 Best Colleges edition.

It is the fourth time since the annual list’s debut in the 2009 Best Colleges issue that USF has appeared among the institutions cited most often by college presidents, provosts and admissions deans nationwide for having made "the most promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus, or facilities."

This year’s rankings placed USF in a 10-way tie at No. 14 on the "Up-and-Comers" roll of 23 national universities — eight private and 13 public — including the following AAU institutions: Purdue University, University of Southern California, Boston University, Carnegie Mellon University, and Tulane University.

"That the ‘Up-and-Comers’ list is based on a recognition of USF’s academic excellence and embrace of innovation by other college and university leaders across the country strongly suggests that our efforts to build the university’s reputation through high-profile, high-impact research and world-class scholarship are working," said Provost and Executive Vice President Ralph Wilcox.

"Coming at a time when we continue to address some very difficult financial realities, the university’s re-emergence on the list also helps to underscore the hard work and ‘can-do’ attitude of our faculty and staff, who despite the challenges remain committed to our vision of USF as a global research university dedicated to student success. This is an achievement which the entire campus community can celebrate."

USF also earns an additional mention in the 2014 Best Colleges compendium, registering at No. 170 on the list of Best National Universities. The university’s three-year change of 11 places, up from No. 181 in 2012, is the best showing of the four State University System (SUS) of Florida institutions making the annual list, including the University of Florida, Florida State and University of Central Florida.

Additional improvements this year include No. 115 in Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs (up from No. 120 last year), No. 159 in Best Undergraduate Business Programs (up from No. 166 last year), and overall National university ranking jumps in the following categories: No. 168 in Financial Resources (up from No. 172), No. 62 in Alumni Giving (up from No. 68), and No. 169 in Graduation and Retention (up from No. 175).
