The Right to Strike for Working Conditions

Historically, public sector employees have always retained the right to strike in order to secure better pay and working conditions, especially when faced with unfavourable government policies or proposed legislation. However, the current economic circumstances of the US may soon make this a thing of the past, as governors are forced to cut their states budget shortfall by bringing public sector employee rights adjacent with those afforded by the private sector. However, while public expenditure must be cut to improve the nation’s overall budget deficit of $1.5 trillion, should it really come at the cost of fundamental employee bargaining rights?

Ohio state legislature this week passed a bill to limit employee’s collective bargaining rights by banning them from striking and also allowing them to refuse to pay their union dues. The primary reasoning behind the idea is to reduce the local governments burden and financial costs, serving the dual purpose of reducing their deficit while also enabling them to compete against more prosperous job creating states. In its is essence it is a logical plan for long term growth, and easily understandable when you understand the recent events in the city of Detroit and throughout many of the southern states of America.

The State Against the Individual

This situation is a textbook example of the main challenge that faces government in a democratic regime, as they are often unable to satisfy the needs of individuals and single groups while also acting in the interests of society as a whole. In this instance, economic regeneration is the best and most suitable methodology for creating prosperity in the state of Ohio, and this can be achieved through reducing public sector expenditure without losing jobs from organizations. Though clearly a way forward for the state as a single entity, it is has already been construed as an elevation of corporate interests above those of the common man.

This conclusion is drawn from the fact that the reduction of collective bargaining rights is perceived as an hostile act of oppression by public sector workers, and one which weakens their standing as individual employees. In a democracy, especially one as long standing as that which has reigned within the US, individuals become accustomed to certain privileges which dictate a freedom of thought and deed. Where this is compromised, even by a piece of legislation that may ultimately benefit them and the state, it evokes a negative emotion as a typical response.

An Act of Repression

Regardless of these perceived benefits however, there are still relevant questions as to whether restricting employees collective bargaining rights is at all suitable in a democratic regime. The right to strike and utilize unions to negotiate pay and conditions is an accepted practice in contemporary culture, and helps to ensure that individuals are not exploited by employers within the workplace. It also allows workers to uphold their freedom of expression while in employment, and take a principled stand against any perceived acts of corporate repression.

These freedoms are inherent to the function of a democracy, as they allow processes of liberal thought and speech to take place within a corporate environment. In the case of these freedoms being denied, then there is a genuine risk that individuals can be exploited by self serving corporate organizations and that democracy itself can become marginalized within the workplace. Of course, democracy is something that should be prevalent in every area of existence, otherwise its purpose in rendered increasingly irrelevant throughout society in its entirety.

A Long Road Towards Agreement

There is likely to be a concerted and well supported attempt to repeal this legislation in the coming Fall, which could create a precedent for other states considering restricting collective bargaining rights. Another benefit of democracy is that it allows individuals and groups to fight for their constitutional rights, which means that any legislation that effects or compromises these in some way will face substantial opposition before it can be implemented fully. So, a long and arduous road lies ahead for Ohio and any state rule that seeks to reduce their local government deficit through this methodology.

Ultimately, unless an understanding and subsequent compromise can be found between local government representatives and the community that they represent, then disagreements and disputes will continue without resolution. Democracy and its freedom comes with a significant of responsibility for both citizens and a governing regime, and this demands a comprehension and respect for others requirements and circumstance. Without it, its very principles become impotent against a gathering of individual and selfish demands.

  5. I do love the manner in which you have framed this particular concern plus it does give me personally a lot of fodder for consideration. Nevertheless, through just what I have observed, I only hope when the commentary stack on that people today keep on issue and in no way start upon a soap box regarding some other news du jour. Anyway, thank you for this superb piece and while I do not agree with the idea in totality, I value your perspective.

  6. Are bonds the next domino to fall? With 85 trillion dollars tied up in the bond market I certainly hope not but one has only to look at Argentinas spectacular crash in 91 to begin to question our own bond markets vunerability.

  9. Civilization, which is characterized by writing, the use of metal, the building of monumental structures, and complex government organizations— did not develop in China until around 1700 B.C. During the time of Confucius, which was the 6th century B.C., the emperor was a puppet. China was divided into states that owed loyalty to the emperor, but were actually governed by aristocrats. At first, Confucius was a civil servant and chief of police in Lu. He was either dismissed from the civil service or went into voluntary exile. His regard for formalities and rituals was fundamental to his teachings. He spent years traveling from one principality to another, giving advice and being honored for his wisdom. His advice was seldom taken, and he was not given another position of authority. In his last years, he retired to the principality of Lu, where he died in 479 B.C., leaving his mark as a teacher.

  21. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  29. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  30. Very good website you have here but I was wondering if you knew of any forums that cover the same topics discussed in this article? I’d really love to be a part of community where I can get advice from other experienced people that share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Thanks!

  31. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  32. I needed to send you this little observation just to give many thanks once again for all the spectacular pointers you have documented at this time. It’s quite generous of people like you to offer without restraint what many of us might have marketed as an ebook to help make some bucks on their own, principally considering the fact that you might have tried it in case you desired. The concepts likewise worked as the great way to realize that someone else have a similar desire just as my very own to understand a little more pertaining to this issue. I know there are lots of more fun occasions up front for those who check out your site.

  33. I needed to create you that little observation to finally say thanks once again considering the striking guidelines you have provided at this time. It is unbelievably open-handed of you giving extensively all that most people would have sold as an ebook in making some dough on their own, even more so given that you might well have tried it in the event you decided. Those basics also served like the fantastic way to be aware that some people have the identical keenness really like my own to learn a whole lot more with reference to this condition. I’m certain there are numerous more pleasant sessions ahead for those who read your blog post.

  34. Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  35. This design is incredible! You most certainly know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Excellent job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

  36. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  37. You certainly deserve a round of applause for your post and more specifically, your blog in general. Very high quality material.

  38. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  39. Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and appearance. I must say you have done a excellent job with this. In addition, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Internet explorer. Exceptional Blog!

  40. Have you ever thought about writing an e-book or guest authoring on other websites? I have a blog centered on the same topics you discuss and would love to have you share some stories/information. I know my subscribers would appreciate your work. If you are even remotely interested, feel free to shoot me an email.

  41. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  42. Whoa! This blog looks just like my old one! It’s on a entirely different topic but it has pretty much the same layout and design. Great choice of colors!

  43. Hello, i read your blog from time to time and i own a similar one and i was just curious if you get a lot of spam responses? If so how do you stop it, any plugin or anything you can recommend? I get so much lately it’s driving me crazy so any help is very much appreciated.

  44. Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point. You clearly know what youre talking about, why throw away your intelligence on just posting videos to your blog when you could be giving us something informative to read?

  46. I have been browsing online more than 3 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all webmasters and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be much more useful than ever before.

  47. Please let me know if you’re looking for a article writer for your blog. You have some really good articles and I think I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I’d love to write some articles for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please send me an e-mail if interested. Many thanks!

  48. Do you have a spam issue on this website; I also am a blogger, and I was curious about your situation; many of us have created some nice methods and we are looking to trade solutions with others, why not shoot me an e-mail if interested.

  49. My developer is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using Movable-type on several websites for about a year and am concerned about switching to another platform. I have heard great things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!

  50. I had a dream about dangling participles last night; probably because I had a bowl of chocolate-chip, fudge brownie, chocolate ice cream followed by a second bowl of hand picked sweet cherries, before I went to bed. Instead of sugarplums dancing in my head, there were dangling participles hovering over the bedpost.

  51. simply put anything in there you don’t want people to meddle with. It isn’t like ‘Come Dine

  52. As a web site owner I believe the material here is reallymagnificent. I appreciate it for your time. It is best to maintain it up forever! Good Luck.

  54. I just sent this post to a bunch of my friends as I agree with most of what you’re saying here and the way you’ve presented it is awesome.

  55. Thanks , I have just been looking for information about this subject for ages and yours is the greatest I’ve discovered till now. But, what about the bottom line? Are you sure about the source?

  56. I find myself coming to your blog more and more often to the point where my visits are almost daily now!

  57. I like this idea. I visited your website for the first time and simply been your fan. Continue to keep writing as I am planning to come to read it daily!!
