In a 15-year climb that stretches six albums, nearly a million records sold and a string of festival-topping tours, indie rock luminaries The National finally make their summer return in an epic harbour-side performance set on the Opera House forecourt.

Joining a league of extraordinary moments such as Crowded House’s Farewell to the World and Massive Attack’s rare appearance in 2010, The National have proven their enduring brilliance as a towering live force – building upon the orchestral swells and propulsive rhythms of their critically acclaimed songbook, including this year’s chart-topping Trouble Will Find Me.

Drawing comparisons to the generation-defining voices of Joy Division, Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Matt Berninger’s majestic baritone has led the band of Ohio-born brothers to become torchbearers of a Brooklyn-bound community of collaborators, counting the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Sharon Van Etten and Grizzly Bear.

As prolific songwriters armed with twin guitarists Aaron and Bryce Dessner, the quintet have slowly evolved from their breakthrough album Alligator, through to the melancholic mastery of Boxer and the world-beating High Violet – performing for the likes of President Obama and receiving features on HBO’s Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire in the process.

Ever-anchored by the Devendorfs’ driving rhythms and a new-found appreciation ‘to embrace the chemistry we have’, the indie rock torchbearers now return to Sydney for a career-spanning set, celebrating 15 years of visceral anthems and slow-burning ballads – a watershed moment for a rare band reaching for the rock ‘n’ roll greats.
