I recently started a job I really like. It’s just my speed, the pay is good, and it’s something I’ve never done before so I’m learning a lot. At first, I was happy because my supervisor seemed really cool and easy to talk to. The not-so-glowing reviews of the place which I saw online, I just chalked up to being written by bitter people who always have something to complain about. Turns out they weren’t so far from the truth…
I gradually started noticing that the corporate culture of the place I’m at is pretty shitty. We’re consistently understaffed and I’m pretty sure some of the things my department does are straight-up illegal, but there’s a lack of training and knowledge, so nobody cares.
One woman in particular (who shares the same job title as me) watches me and any coworkers I’m particularly close with. She’s snitched on us and hasn’t even tried to be subtle about it (ex: she and a friend would be standing behind the bathroom door, listening in on my coworker’s conversation). She reports everything she sees or hears to my supervisor who is super sweet to your face but acts like a high school gossip queen behind your back. Took me a while to see that second part.
How would you handle this? I know I should rise above it, be quiet, and do my work, but it’s also affecting my coworkers. The snitch culture my supervisor has cultivated is making us all feel like children who are being babysat. Every time I see the snitch and her fake smile, I feel anger. The unspoken corporate culture of this place makes me think nothing good will happen if I go to HR.
Have you ladies been in a similar situation? How have you handled it? Thank you so much in advance. It’s getting to the point where I don’t even want to go in to work most days and come home cranky. :/
