Since the beginning of time, governments and organized religions have used several methods and tactics to discourage and end all dissent. Particularly in organized religions, shunning has been a common practice. You must abide by the rules, or shunning is your fate. No one, including your family, would talk to you, no one would deal with or interact with you, no one would do business with you, and no one would employ you. So, you are in cold water, all by yourself. Human societies are models of greater interdependence. It is literally impossible to live, at least in the long term, without any cooperation extended by the people around you. Ultimately, you either have to leave or die.
Shunning is considered brutal and highly unethical in secular societies. But governments still need to discourage dissent. So, what do they do? As always, for thousands of years worldwide, they rename, relabel, and repack the same old thing and throw it back on us as a new thing. This newly redressed, same-old is the cancel culture. The purpose of both shunning and cancel culture is to force the person back to compliance, by hook or by crook. In shunning the person would be blamed for disobeying God. In cancel culture, they would blame a person for violating the new secular God, the government. In shunning, all the curses and bad things are the fate of the behavior of the dissenter. In cancel culture, too, the dissenter could not be more wrong.
An intermediary of shunning and cancel culture is a boycott. Unlike shunning and cancel culture, the boycott may or may not be related to God, or the new God, the government. It could be something like a mom stopped talking to her daughter. After all, the daughter no longer listens to her or does something the mom perceives as crazy. The extended family may boycott a family for doing or not doing something promoted or prohibited by the extended family, or for doing something that could potentially hurt the extended family. A community may boycott someone or something because it does not comply with the community standards. Buyers may boycott a seller or manufacturer if the seller or manufacturer is doing something they disagree with. Often, governments or agencies directly or indirectly controlled by the government would use boycotts to force noncompliant people into compliance.
Ostracization is also a tactic that is often used by governments and religions internally against their own noncompliant people and against each other to promote hate or justify the wars and conflicts. Sometimes the target group might have committed a tiny infraction that would then be conflated to the maximum possible by their governments and their partners in crime or by the other government, religion, or alliance of governments or religions. In many cases, they create an issue out of thin air and then exaggerate it to the max. In these situations, the governments and religions, including the religion of Atheism, are often found in bed together. The purpose is to kill the character, image, and reputation of the person or the dissenting group.
Governments and organized religions also frequently target people to keep them in the loop. Targeting is an inclusive term that encompasses a vast array of tactics. It includes things like threats, taking away or hurting the source of income, making the family feel endangered, propaganda campaigns, filing lawsuits, imprisoning, and even killing all or some of the dissenters. Targeting nowadays is mainly reserved for extreme cases when nothing else is working, because it has become hazardous for governments and religions themselves due to the incredible advances in photographic and recording technologies, widespread on social media and in citizen journalism. It is also why governments and religions are trying their best to exert as much control over social media and citizen journalism as possible.
Assassinations and murders are still a tactic of choice for governments and religions despite highly propagandized international laws and codes of ethics, and these are more common than an average person realizes. These require even more intense and extensive involvement, defense, and cover-up from proxies like bureaucracy, politicians, corporate media, academia, gurus, and technocrats, though, because targeting can still be very damaging to governments and religions if they get widely exposed and uncovered. So, every possible measure would be in place by the governments, religions, and their proxies to keep the cover as hard and as dense as possible. Denial, spreading confusion, alternate theories, labeling it as a conspiracy theory, lying, and deception are the standard methods used to cover up the vicious targeting.
A recent example is the treatment extended to the people who were resisting and opposing the recent COVID pandemic that led to the brutal and highly damaging shutdowns and lockdowns. A virus that was more or less like a flu virus in mortality and morbidity caused by it becomes the basis for an incredible showdown of the government authority, breach of natural rights, constitutional violations, corporate and big pharma handouts, extension and broadening of control and authority, and financial, economic, and business disaster. The people who were opposing and resisting it were ostracized, cancelled, boycotted, shunned, targeted, and even killed. The major contributor to the invention of RNA vaccination and several patent holders were labeled anivaxer, liar, and fake.
The shutdowns and lockdowns were yet another eye-opener for the people in the know. These were incredibly threatening and bothersome. It showed that there are no limits on how far governments can go. The realization that literally nothing is impossible when it comes to government tyranny has been terrifying. It is puzzling why many still do not realize how and why all authoritative institutions and figures end up singing the same song, word by word, in sync. They act like one body, moving together in harmony. Even if they are right, being intelligent beings, logically speaking, there must be some differences between them, if they are sincere. How do all differences among them completely evaporate away overnight?
