You will cover communication formulas and the factors needed to become a successful and skilful communicator and how to achieve these. You will explore the different types of communication, including verbal and non-verbal communication, written and visual communication, and listening. You will also explore how the different age groups communicate and the ways in which practitioners can interact appropriately with them. You will cover the best ways to build children’s communication skills and how adults can support children and help extend their speech. You will look at the benefits of children having support from adults on their emotional development, behavioural development and social development. You will explore the ways practitioners can communicate with children who have language and communication difficulties. You will look at the differences between language delay and language disorder as well as ways in which we can support children with speech, language and communication difficulties for each communication impairment. You will then move onto looking at how speech, language and communication supports all seven areas of children’s development. You will also cover the Every Child a Talker (ECaT) project and how practitioners can use the strategies within it to support children’s language development. Finally, you will consider the importance of the learning environment in children’s development. In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80 or more in the final multiple choice quiz. You will look at the definitions of speech, language and communication and how they work together as well as finally looking at some of the difficulties that children experience with regard to speech, language and communication and what causes these difficulties. Unit 2 – Language milestones for children from birth to 10 years old – In this unit you will look at why it is important to know the typical language milestones a child will reach and each language milestone for each stage in a child’s life from birth to 10 years old. You will look at what happens during those milestones and their developments. Unit 3 – The different communication types – In this unit you will explore the communication formulas and the different types of communication. You will finish the unit by looking at the factors needed to become a successful and skilful communicator and how to achieve these. Unit 4 – How to communicate with different age groups – In this unit you will consider how the different age groups communicate and the way in which practitioners can interact appropriately with them. You will finish the unit by looking at the benefits of children having support from adults on their emotional development, behavioural development and social development. Unit 5 – Communicating with children with a speech, language and communication impairment – In this unit you will explore the ways practitioners can communicate with children who have language and communication difficulties. You will consider the differences between language delay and language disorder. Finally you will learn how you can support children with EAL and develop their language and communication skills. Unit 6 – How speech, language and communication supports other areas of development – In the final unit you will explore how speech, language and communication support all seven areas of children’s development.
