All about this Mental Health First-Aider course A mental health first-aider is needed when someone is struggling to cope with an ongoing mental health condition or when they are going through a mental health episode or crisis. Their role is to spot signs of potential problems, assess possible risks to the person and others, listen without judgement, give assistance or encourage the person to seek further help. Throughout this course you will explore the different types of mental health issues and the signs and symptoms. You will then look at the roles and responsibilities of a mental health first-aider and how to recognise when someone is struggling. The course will end by looking at how to put mental health first aid into action. Please note this course will not qualify you to become a mental health first-aider, instead it should be completed as an introduction into mental health first aid, or for those already qualified to refresh their skills and knowledge. In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80 or more in the final multiple choice quiz. The unit will finish with exploring the difference between a mental health condition, episode and crisis. Unit 2 – The roles and responsibilities of a mental health first aider – In this unit you will look at the aims of mental health first aid and consider the role and responsibilities of a mental health first-aider, including raising awareness within your organisation of the need for good mental health in order to protect staff well-being. Unit 3 –Recognising when someone is struggling – In this unit you will consider ways to access whether someone is struggling with their mental health, you will also learn about two mental health action plan protocols that can be used when making the judgement. You will also cover how someone with a mental health disability can be helped in the workplace. Unit 4 – Putting mental health first aid into action – In the final unit of the course you will look at how to put attributes and behaviours needed for mental health first aid work into practice and how to encourage others to engage with the support offered. The unit looks at non-urgent and urgent warning signs. It also considers urgent actions that should be taken in the event of an emergency.
