You will learn that lone working does not have its own legislation and that it comes under general health and safety laws. The employer is responsible for ensuring that the risks associated with lone working are assessed. You will look at the meaning of competency and consider who is competent to complete a risk assessment. In this course you will acknowledge the hierarchy of hazard control and that it can assist employers in deciding on the most appropriate control measures for risks. You will look at a range of devices and systems that can be used to reduce the risks to lone workers. They do not prevent accidents and incidents from occurring. However, they enable a lone worker to summon for help if there are any problems or emergencies. Lone workers should have access to adequate first aid. Therefore you will look at the legal duty to provide adequate provisions such as first aiders, first aid supplies and first aid facilities. At the end of this course you will learn what is included in a first aid provisions for lone workers, and that first aid provisions required should be based on a risk assessment. You will look at who lone workers are in details and look at some of the hazards they face. You will consider why they are at higher risk, as well as considering what personal safety is and how it relates to lone working. You will look at work-related violence and associated risks when lone working and consider some high-risk activities where lone working should be avoided. Finally you will look at the overall responsibilities of employers and employees. Unit 2 – Risk assessments – This unit will introduce you to lone working risk assessments. You will look at the meaning of risk assessment and will look at what the law requires as well as considering what constitutes a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. You will consider why risk assessments are important and look at the legal, moral and financial reasons. You will learn about who is responsible for risk assessments and who is competent to complete them. Finally, you will look at what dynamic risk assessments are and why they are used. Unit 3 – Control measures – In this unit, you will be introduced to lone working control measures as well as looking at the requirements for lone working policies and procedures. You will consider the options in the hierarchy of hazard control and will at some examples. You will take a look at what safe systems of work are and their role in lone working, as well as exploring work-related stress and violence. You will look at reducing the risks when lone working in isolated areas and working from home. Finally, you will look at some considerations for those individuals who may be classed as a higher risk. Unit 4 – Safe working arrangements – In this unit, you will be introduced to some examples of safe working arrangements that can reduce the risks to lone workers as well as learning about the importance of training for lone workers. You will explore the arrangements for the supervision and monitoring of lone workers as well as looking at buddy systems and some considerations with their use. You will look at the different types of lone working devices that can be used to enhance the protection of lone workers as well as learning about some of the emergencies that could occur when lone working. Finally, you will look at the reporting of accidents, incidents, near misses and hazards that could arise and look at why it is important to report, record and investigate.
