All about this LOLER course This course will introduce you to LOLER and you will consider what it means. In this course you will learn that lifting equipment must be suitable for the task and the conditions in which it will be used. The risks must be considered in the selection process and the equipment to be chosen by a competent person. You will learn that all lifting equipment and accessories can be identified by using a colour-coded system. A four colour-coded system can be used to indicate when the lifting equipment was last tested and inspected, you will learn the importance of maintenance, inspection and testing. Lifting equipment must function properly and be in good condition for it to be safe. If it is not maintained and inspected, defects may go unnoticed and unrepaired which can increase the risk of accidents occurring. You will learn why emergency procedures are required and will look at some examples of emergencies involving lifting operations. You will finish this course by learning what a rescue plan is and that it is a fundamental part of planning. Only people who are trained and competent should carry out rescues from heights and this is a requirement in the Work at Heights Regulations 2005. You will look at the different types of lifting equipment, lifting accessories and loads, as well as looking at examples of equipment and operations that are not covered under LOLER. You will explore the current legislation that applies to lifting operations and equipment. You will also consider some additional regulations that could apply to lifting operations and lifting equipment. Unit 2 – Identifying and assessing risks – This unit will introduce you to the terms hazard and risk. You will also consider the meaning of accidents and incidents (near misses). In this unit you will explore some of the hazards associated with lifting operations and look at some examples of accidents that can occur, you will also look at the meaning of risk assessment and look at what the law requires. Unit 3 – Selection of suitable lifting equipment – In this unit you will be introduced to selecting the most suitable lifting equipment for the task and conditions, you will also look at the legal requirements surrounding lifting equipment selection. You will look at safety aspects, risks and other factors that should be considered when selecting lifting equipment. You will look at the importance of considering the positioning and installation of lifting equipment, as well considering how testing and certification can influence equipment selection. Unit 4 – Maintenance, inspections and testing – In this unit, you will be introduced to maintenance, inspection and testing and will consider their importance. You will look at the laws that require maintenance, inspection, testing and thorough examination. You will explore the requirements for the thorough examination of lifting equipment, as well as looking at who is competent to carry out these examinations. You will look at the recording and reporting of thorough examinations and inspections and consider the actions that should be taken if defects are found. Unit 5 – Planning lifting operations – In this unit, you will be introduced to planning and organising lifting operations. You will look at the legal requirements under LOLER as well as looking at the two stages of planning. You will look at lifting plans, safe systems of work and permits to work. You will also look at what these are and will consider what should be included in a lifting plan. You will look at the importance of considering the position and installation of lifting equipment when planning and consider the supervision required when carrying out lifting operations. Unit 6 – Reducing risks – In this final unit, you will be introduced to reducing the risks associated with lifting equipment and operations. You will look at preventing slips, trips and falls and preventing access to dangerous parts. You will consider the effect of weather on lifting operations. You will look at the legal requirements for providing information, instruction and training as well as considering the information and instructions that should be given to employees and others.
