Description
Papel Amate, or handmade bark paper, is an art form of ancient Mesoamerica that still exists today. Otomi artisans in the Mexican state of Puebla craft the paper from mulberry or fig tree bark, then sell or trade the homemade paper to other indigenous groups for decoration. Every Forest Scene bark painting by Nahua artist Felix Aguilar is a unique work of art. Utilizing festive colors that solidly fill the scene, this imaginative design includes four colorful birds and the mythical Nagual. Felix and his family are from Tepecoacuilco de Trujano, in the southwestern Mexican state of Guerrero. He has been painting colorful scenes of birds and wildlife on handmade amate paper for 40 years.
