The unranked format of the old European Cup competition brought about many oddities, such asNottingham Forest facing a tougher opponent in the premier round (the competition holder Liverpool) of their successful 1978-79 campaign than the final ( Suède champions Malmö).Of course, Forest were themselves unexpected finalists in what was the club’s first ever appearance in Europe’s biggest clubs competition.It was a team that had grown in stature as thetournament progressed and the team went into the Munich final as heavy favourites.
