A $500,000 gift has given new impetus to Albion College’s fund drive for Phase II of the planned improvements in its outdoor athletic facilities, expected to cost $3 million. The gift, which came in August from anonymous donors, will support the construction of a new soccer/lacrosse complex.
“We are very grateful to these community-minded donors for their generous gift, and the fact that they wanted to be sure it addressed some of the College’s current priorities,” said Interim President Mike Frandsen. “Enhancing our outdoor athletic facilities will benefit our varsity teams and the entire student body.”
Reconfigured to a north-south orientation, the new varsity soccer/lacrosse complex will have artificial turf and permanent bleachers and press box facilities. The addition of stadium lighting will also allow for extended use of the field to aid in scheduling athletic practices and events outside of class time and enable the College to host both high school and collegiate tournaments.
“This generous gift gives us important momentum for our athletics campaign,” said Athletic Director Matt Arend. “We deeply appreciate this tremendous vote of confidence in Briton athletics and all that we hope to accomplish through these improvements.”
The athletics campaign will also support the reconfiguration of the College’s baseball and softball stadiums. Also planned are a new entrance to Alumni Field, serving as a gateway to the entire complex, and a centrally located outdoor plaza that will offer a gathering space for players and fans.
