Immigration Reform, Limited Government, Economic Growth

It is really surprising to me, what happens to the minds of many Conservatives and Republicans when they quickly give up their deeply rooted idea of limited government on issues like military, policing the world, abortions, drugs, prostitution and immigration. This actually shows that they are not really conservatives or Republicans. They are just religious and white supremacy bigots. The golden principle of limited government, enshrined in our constitution, is extremely logical and covers almost every aspect of our lives. Why can’t they understand or do not want to understand the simple facts that ever growing military industrial complex, war after war, anti-abortion, anti-drugs, anti-prostitution, anti-immigration and all the similar laws are the recipes for big government, and ever growing and complicating taxation.

Conservative agenda of policing the world is not, in anyways, less damaging than the welfare agenda of democrats. The whole military industrial complex, bases around the world, wars, police, courts, jails, and healthcare and welfare services needed due to enforcement of anti-drug laws, anti-abortion laws and anti-prostitution laws, lead to big government, higher taxation, budget deficits and government debt. These ideas are just as incompatible, as welfare laws are, with the ideas of limited government and lower taxation. We can never achieve the goals of smaller government and lower taxes, as long as we have these insane laws and policies in place.

The framers of constitution kept these affairs outside the domain of government, for obvious reasons. They knew that the government infringements on these areas are not just way too expensive, those are also a great danger for personal freedoms and provide excuses for ever growing tyranny. If we look at our history, we find out that once started, the slow, gradual and barely invisible process of growing government, increasing taxation and limitations on personal liberties, has never stopped. This is because there is, no stop to it. The ambitions and goals are unlimited, until we a have total control of government on everything, very much like a socialist or communist societies.

In America, there were times when government had absolutely no access to your bedroom, on what you consume and put in your body, and very little control on, how you conduct your personal, family, work related business. Now, there are ever increasing piles of laws and regulations in every aspect of your lives. Even well qualified and experienced lawyers cannot keep track of, and do not fully understand, the ever growing burden of taxation and other laws.

Immigration is not exempt from this general rule, either. Government keeps making the immigration laws and policies, more and more complicated which made legal immigration process expensive and cumbersome. Typically legal immigration applicants have to wait up to more than a decade for their turn, even after paying exuberant fees. Lot of this has to do with the big corporate lobbies. To drive down the wages and get cheap labor, these lobbies deliberately lobbied for legislation and regulations which may make it harder for legal immigration, and encourage illegal immigration.

Ironically, it is not even that hard to have a simplified and easy immigration policy, if politicians can give up political bickering and stop using immigration as another source for taxation and revenue. All we have to do is to go back to our roots of accepting that we are a nation of immigrants. Although, for our majority, this policy was okay until majority of immigrants was white. Now, since, immigration is challenging that majority and current demographics, the open immigration policies have become unacceptable for majority. What they do not understand is that resisting open immigration policies is just creating even more mess and making everyone’s life miserable while immigrants are still coming in, illegally though.

Legislating and enacting laws which collide with nature or restrict the natural phenomena, always make things worse. We have seen this, and are experiencing in alcohol prohibition, drugs prohibition, prostitution prohibition, anti-gay laws, anti-abortion laws and highly restrictive immigration policies. Above all, most of the arguments made in favor of such laws are totally baseless. For example, how can you say that religions would have made contraception and abortions illegal, if the current methods were already available and practiced at the time?
A big proportion of anti-immigration argument is based on welfare state. This is like blaming donkeys for horses’ sins. What we need here are welfare reforms, as well. Far too extended welfare system which we cannot even afford anymore is ridiculous. Instead of fixing welfare system and relieving our economy from its unbearable burden, if we start making an economically damaging, anti-immigration argument than all we are doing is to make right with two wrongs. Blocking immigration will not fix the damages caused by over extended welfare system, and it will deprive us of the benefits of immigration which we have been reaping throughout the course of our history, and which is one of the key factors for our leading position in the world.
The real problem here is that the earlier immigrants did not have all these liberal privileges, available. They had no choice accept to work hard and honest, and assimilate in society, to make their way. Now, we are providing them with the option of welfare, for which they cannot be blamed, and not even encouraging their assimilation in American society. An exclusive attitude is rather being encouraged. Hospitals and other businesses are being mandated by government to provide interpretation and translation services, free of charge, to immigrants who do not learn English.
Increasingly a larger number of employers, including government, is openly requiring or preferring bilingual candidates for jobs, instead of asking immigrants to learn and speak English. This is now reaching the level of reverse discrimination. Native Americans are being denied of employment, in the midst of a serious jobs crisis, to benefit the people who refuse to learn English. This makes no sense, at all, to me. They are most welcome to America. But, they must not expect any free benefits and services and they must learn our language. Preference for or requiring bilingual in hiring process must be considered as discrimination.
