I made a terrible decision about 16 years ago: I let a man move into my house with me and my two kids ages 8 & 5 (girl & boy). He molested my daughter and I did not find out until a couple of years later. I had already kicked him out (he was a general asshole) and moved a town over. She told her teacher that it had happened, I was called in, and we took it from there. I called the sheriff, we reported, they interviewed, and a case was filed. He was arrested and spent several days in jail until his idiot parents bailed him out.
Long story short, his horrible parents (who had always gotten him out of every situation and made it so that he never had to suffer the consequences for any of his actions) paid for a defense attorney and played the legal system for a couple of years, using every tactic in the book to delay/deny. There also were delays due to scheduling, conflicts with other cases, etc. We had by then moved out of state but were still in contact with the prosecutor in full expectation that we would go to trial.
Finally, finally it was time. They flew us out for the trial. We waited in the hotel room – she was 12 by this time but fully ready to testify against this piece of shit. We waited all day and finally, the prosecutor called us. Bad news. The defense "ran the jury," which they explained as questioning them in such a way that it was impossible to choose a jury fairly. I was flabbergasted and infuriated. I demanded that we just continue and go on until we got one. Due to scheduling, that was impossible and we had to return home and go for another trial.
Soon after that, we were contacted with a plea bargain offer. He would plead to felony child abuse and have to register as a sex offender; however, no jail time was included except for time served. I discussed it with my by then 13-year-old daughter and frankly, we were both just so tired of it that she agreed. She honestly didn’t want to deal with it anymore, as long as he had serious repercussions. This was about 2001.
Ever since then, I’ve always felt a vague sense of justice never served… that he should have been made to face the music… face the public with what he’d done and pay for it via shame and ridicule. I did manage to tell several people in that town and warn them about having him around their kids… still…
Fast forward to last week. I periodically would google his name/home town, just to see if there was any news. Lo and behold, I ran across his obituary (one of those family-paid, we-will-miss-you-so-much ads). Made me sick. He had died at 48 and I was just so happy, I couldn’t wait to forward it to my daughter.
I was still so full of feelings of things left unsaid, that I bought a card to send to his parents. It said, "Heard the good news" on the front; inside it said "And couldn’t be happier for you! Congratulations!" – although I changed it to, "And couldn’t be happier! Congratulations to us!"
I wrote this on the left side of the card: "We only just found out, but Hallelujah! The child rapist is dead! At such a young age, too… KARMA! What was it – drugs, alcohol or an angry father? Lest we forget, you raised a dreadful human being and after finding out that he was a pedophile, you still defended him like the backwards, clannish dumbasses you are. You all are disgusting. Thank God the CHILD RAPIST is dead! The world is a much safer place without his loathsome presence. Adios, asshole! We will celebrate every February!"
I honestly don’t care how these people feel. They can go fuck themselves as far as I’m concerned. I’m just glad I got to remind them of what their horrible offspring did to my child. 🙁
EDIT: So many people are asking how I know that they knew he did it. (1) They stated it to several mutual acquaintances. (2) The prosecutor informed me of that fact as well. (3) He eventually admitted it to them according to these same mutual acquaintances. This is probably why they went for the plea deal rather than trial.
This was something I’ve always wanted to say to them and now I’ve said it. I don’t care what anyone thinks; it was cathartic and now they know. And they are not "elderly" by any means.
