One of the nerdy parts about me is that I love to continue to learn. During short breaks at work, I read through a few industry blogs to see what is going on in my field. I’ve taught myself HTML and minor coding through blogging, which was foreign to me prior. So when I find an opportunity (and time) to learn something new, like a skill, I take that chance.
This is where Skillshare comes in. According to their website, Skillshare is “a global community where you can learn real-world skills from incredible teachers”. It allows you to learn anywhere, anytime and at any pace, which is perfect for those of us who are just too busy. For each class, you watch video lessons, create projects and then get peer feedback. All of teachers are top-notch industry professionals. Areas of interest include business, design, food & drink, music, technology and more.
One area that you might be interesting in is their School of Fashion and Style. This school offers a variety of classes for every age, gender, budget (most classes are under $25!) and skill level. In these classes, you will learn essential skills from industry leaders who are shaping the world of fashion today. Whether you are an aspiring apparel brand mogul or simply looking to write your first style blog post, the Skillshare School of Fashion and Style will provide you with the tools to make it happen.
Here are a few of the classes I found to be particularly interesting.
A Staple of Branding: How to Start Your Fashion Company. In this course, you will get to complete a branding project with name, slogan, logo, and first collection CADs. This is an excellent class for those who want to start their own fashion side-project.
Jewelry Making Basics: Embroidered Accessories with P.S.- I Made This. If you already are a follower of Erica’s blog, then this is the perfect chance to learn her jewelry-making skills.
Introduction to Fashion Photography: Capture the Look. Every fashion blogger- whether you use a fancy DSLR or a simple point-and-shoot- can benefit from learning a few things about photography. Learn how to capture the perfect shots for your outfit posts with this course.
Red Carpet Ready: Makeup Skills for Evening Looks. Want to learn the secrets behind your favorite celebrities’ red carpet makeup looks? Want to learn how to highlight and contour like Kim Kardashian? Then this course is for you. Mario Dedivanovic, a professional makeup artist, will teach you.
Eye of the Beholder: Introduction to Beauty Photography. Much like the fashion photography course above, this one teaches you how to take beautiful makeup photos, or “glamour shots” as I like to call them. Mike Ruiz, a photographer to the stars, will help you perfect your camera skills.
Interior Styling: Style Your Space like a Pro. For those who aren’t necessarily into fashion blogging, but prefer writing about home decor, this class is perfect. In this class, you will professionally style 5 areas in your home. I loved looking through the 250+ previous projects that students created- talk about major home envy/inspiration!
