After defeating Iceland and Austria in qualifying for the 1964 Nations Cup, Ireland were unable to qualify for the finals due to a home and away match against Spain. A 7-1 defeat on aggregate made the two teams feel a little further apart in the final. Two years later, another defeat against the same opponents in a play-off in Paris ended Ireland’s hopes of a place at the 1966 World Cup.
