Should the US Government do More to Protect Domestic Interests?

Every fair minded and reasonable individual would advocate a democratic society, and champion a government regime that takes its peoples opinions and needs into consideration. This guarantees that a government acts in the interests of society at large, and implements legislation and policy to protect and serve the voting demographic that brought them to power in the first instance. While this is not only desirable for individual countries and communities, it would be wrong to suggest that this methodology of rule would not improve the perilous and hostile state of the world and its factions at large.
With this in mind, it is natural that many of the democratic super powers in the world seek to intervene and impart the democratic wisdom on others, and often go to great lengths to modify countries regimes to comply with their own. The US and the UK have historically taken a keen interest in foreign politics and regimes, both as a way of ensuring the safety of a global community and improving international politics at large. However, as western culture strives to battle hampered economic growth and frequent instances of violent crime, there is growing concern that domestic issues are not receiving the attention they deserve.

The Demands of Foreign Policy
The recent unrest and political protests in Egypt have only served to highlight the vast and significant role that the US continues to play in global peace. While reducing its representative presence of diplomats in the country, it is continuing to pledge aid and support to Egypt during its period of transition. In addition to this, the US is seeking to take a keen and considered interest in political reform in the country, by encouraging diplomatic values and the regulated processes of election.
As most civilized and democratic countries like the US have defined policies and agents to address foreign political issues, it seems reasonable for them to look to impart their resources and efforts into resolving global conflicts and tension. More than that, many would argue that it is in fact a duty of the US to do this, in the wider interests of both world peace and integrating multiculturalism. Through this, a well structured regime can teach the democratic principles of government to other nations and improve the relationships between opposed political powers.

The issue only becomes divisive when the US itself is experiencing domestic problems. As the country continues to emerge slowly from the recession and at a reduced rate of growth, and spiraling levels of violence continue to disrupt social concord, the main priority for the government should be to resolve these problems and regenerate the nations prosperity. As different conflicts simmer in the Middle East and continue to capture a governments attention, there is a growing perception that these domestic issues are being neglected.

Protecting Citizens in the First Instance
The issue of priorities was pertinent during the invasion of Iraq, where both the US and UK committed vast physical and financial resources to toppling a tyrannical reign that was deemed a threat to world peace. Whether or not this perceived threat was genuine, the larger issue was the devotion of time, labor and wealth that deviated away from domestic spending and the improvement of immediate circumstances. If a governments first task is to protect its own society, then this may be seen as a irresponsible and misguided activity.
In an ideal world, there is nothing wrong with the US displaying a keen interest in global politics and welfare, or with deciding to help and advise a country undergoing substantial transition and conflict. Looking to reform political values may go a long way to establishing peace and democracy in a nation, and take significant steps in the direction of world harmony. However, we are residing in an entirely imperfect civilization, with the dual consequence that any mediation must be done responsibly and also that the US ensures its domestic issues are in order prior to any overseas intervention.

Finding the Balance Between Domestic and World Peace
Whether you consider foreign policy and involvement as a duty or a choice, it is an inevitable fact of the contemporary world and integral to any democratic regime. Therefore, the only requirement is that it is managed sensibly and in line with an individuals countries resources and own state of being, so that a balance can be sought between serving patriots and spreading the principles of democracy to a wider global audience. This equilibrium is crucial, as without a happy and prosperous society a country can not progress and hope to serve others, meaning that both domestic and international requirements will go entirely unfulfilled.
